I've just crocheted a 7 inch square in cream aran, and will do a couple more in some lilac and red aran that I have spare. I'll still do the 8 inch in the firey colours that we're all planning, but thought I'd do a couple of 7 inch while I'm at it. Postage is hardy going to cost much more to send a few extra:D

Will post a picture when I've done a few more:smiley:

I can't tell you all what a warm glow I get from reading all your posts - the enthusiasm for knitting these squares is amazing and so is the willingness to learn new skills. I think we will all benefit from this, not just the people who get the blankets. As I said yesterday, the usual squares for OECS are 7 x 7" but they will take our 8 x 8s now. I was thinking that we could all send in one or more 8 x 8s in the 'fire' colours then if anyone wants to carry on - I know I will - we can start to send in 7 x 7s. We know they will all be used. I think it would be a good idea to pack each size squares in, say, a polythene bag (one of those that all the junk mail and magazines come in so we will be recycling!) and label the bag, it would make it easier for all the lovely people doing the sewing up. Also, put in a little note or write on the label that we are the MSE group. It really does look as if The Wooligans is top favourite for our name. This was from a suggestion of 'Woolly HOoligans' from M.E. and 'Wooligans' from PIGPEN - if everyone is in agreement, shall we decide on that? I like it and it does seem to sum us up, doesn't it?

WHATATWIT - I think it's a great idea to add numbers in our sigs. And, yes, I agree - Martin:money: must surely be able to knit because it is SO moneysaving!

It looks as if we have definitely found an outlet for our charity
squares with OECS but, for our Blanket for Smoky, I think mini-meets will be the way to go because I'm not sure if we can ask OECS to do that. I have been given some other suggestions for ways to for us to exchange personal details for posting without compromising MSE or breaking any rules, which I am looking into, and will let you know soon and, also, REDRUBY is kindly looking at asking her place of work if we can send squares there for a mini-meet so Smoky's blanket will get done, one way or the other. I still think that it is the most fantastic idea to make one for her, so thanks BENTHOSBOY, and I hope you have already cast on your first square! Smoky's blanket is going to look wonderful because it will be made up of our personal choices of colours - a real technicolour dream blanket for a wonderful lady.

As I think I said in an earlier post, OECS have said that 63 squares makes one blanket so putting numbers of squares completed in our sigs is a good idea from that point of view. It means we can keep an eye on how many blankets we achieve. Can we put numbers for Smoky's on our sigs also, please?

Well, I will look through all the info that OECS emailed to me yesterday and will get back to you with that; they have several addresses in the UK for sending the squares. Do you know if it's OK for me to post that info on this thread or should it be pm'd? It maybe on their website but, if not, I will need to let you know.

Anyway, thanks for reading this very long post and thanks once again, you lovely bunch of Wooligans (?!) for all your time and effort.

Hope everyone has a great Easter!

I did a granny square using a 4.5 hook that I got from Freecycle :j I've only just learnt to crochet, and FWIW, I found a granny square easier for a beginner than crocheting in rows. I got loads of books from the library to learn, supplemented by You Tube. The granny square was also really easy to join in different colours. There's a picture early on in the thread.

Ok, just finished catching up on this thread and am now confused! Are we doing 8" squares or 7" as last night I did two 8" as that's what was decided early on?
    Thanks

Hi there; just to clarify things. The OECS group - the people who sew squares up for charity - usually ask for 7 x7 inch squares. I have told them that we have been making 8 x 8 inch squares based on the WaterAid blanket and they have said that we can send them our 8 x 8s. I think the best thing to do would be to send our 8 x 8s in the colours we have decided (the warm firey colours) and then, if anyone wants to carry on once we have reached the 63 squares needed for one blanket, we can start making 7 x 7s because they are standard for the group. I'm sure a lot of us will want to carry on anyway. When sending 8 x 8s we need to label the packages with the size to make it easy for those sewing them up to identify them.

I shall ask MSE Andrea if it is OK to post the OECS addresses (for sending the squares) on the thread. If I can, then I shall post them - there are several throughout the country.

    Many thanks

    Kathy

ME - size 8s would be ideal for DK yarn, depending on your tension.

Hi Sammy, If you're using DK wool, a 4mm (that's a size 8 in 'old money') should be fine:D
