Oh, Beth - as if I would go silent on you! I didn't feel awkward, just surprised, and I loved the subtle sweet way you explained! 'Each to their own' is exactly right and it's great for your Mum that you didn't go silent on her. Have a really good weekend!

Hi MargaretClare - welcome aboard. I just wanted to let you know that we have finished the 8" squares now because we have enough for the initial blankets we aimed for. We are now doing 7" squares so I hope you haven't done too many of the 8" ones! If you look at the very first post in this thread all the relevant info is there with addresses for posting squares, hats and so on. Here is the link to www.lovinghands.org.uk -it's a brilliant group which sends hats and other knitted items to deserving causes and, also, if you look here http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/Wooligan/ this is the link to our Yahoo group. If you apply to join I will 'approve' you!
I'm so glad you have joined us - we are all really enjoying the knitting and crochet and love the fact that we are helping those less fortunate than ourselves.
As I say, there is lots of info on the very first post on here but if you have any questions please feel free to post on here.
Kathy
Ooooops. I've done about 4 inches of a brown 8 inch square. If I finish this one can it still be used somewhere? Or shall I pull it out?
I think my best bet will be to make some of the stretchy hats for premmy babies. I'll ask my contact in the Maternity Unit if they'd like some there.
I wish I'd known about this ages ago! Generations of women in my family never sat with their hands still, always had something even when listening to the radio (before TV) and for centuries back before that.
UPDATE: Special Care Baby Unit at Southend University Hospital are always happy to receive premmy clothes, hats etc. All are gratefully received.
Have been talking to a fellow church member who's involved with the Women's Fellowship group. Some of them knit for Containers of Hope which goes to developing countries. Hats, mittens and scarves for children in the mountains. However, the friend I've just been talking to agrees with me that we'd rather make things for local outlets. She said that the Methodist Church locally had had exactly the same experience as I described above about the Christmas bazaar in another local church, and they'd all become so disillusioned they stopped having a hand-knits stall because nobody wanted hand-knits any more, and that's when they started sending them to developing countries instead.
So I'll get some baby wool and start on one of the Super Stretchy hats from Preemies UK. At least I know they will be appreciated.
Can't get in contact with the Yahoo site, they keep turning down my application.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Helloooo.....I've just surfed in here, not sure how but......what an inspiring thread.....please may I join you all?
Have I got it right, you need preemie hats, sending direct to loving hands? Also 7" squares, where do they have to be sent? Do they have to be any particular colour?
Oooh, I'm itching to get started, where are those needles???:rolleyes:

Hello Peckedhen
Try the Special Care Baby Unit at your nearest hospital - you may find they'd be delighted to have the hats for littlies in incubators etc.

Hi all! We've been out for the afternoon being introduced to the grandchildren's Wii Fit! Great fun and we had dinner there as well!
MargaretClare - I can 'invite' you to join the Yahoo group if it won't accept your application. If you would like to pm me your email address I can 'invite' you to join that way! Well, I, for one, hate just sitting watching the TV with nothing else to do - it's a shame that a hand-knits stall was not welcome. At least you know that all of us here love knitting!
PeckedHen - welcome to you, too - all the relevant info is on the very first post on this thread. Glad you could join us and please join us here on our Yahoo group http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/Wooligan/
Lainey - I'm hitting the dye bottle tomorrow morning - or DH is; he puts it on for me, bless him, because I get too impatient! Thanks for updating us on the blankets. You must be all 'squared' out!
Pippa - what a shame the crochet hats didn't work out. What do you think the problem was? Mind, you did very well with 4 hats to add today! Well done!
Well, I've just had a lovely long bath and I'm going to sit and share a bar of Turkish Delight choccie with OH and catch up with last night's Dirty Sexy Money and last week's Love Soup and I shall, of course, have some needles on the go!
Have a lovely evening and will catch up with you all tomorrow!
Latest update!
The first figures are for the STC (Save the Children) hats and the second is for the (IS) Innocent Smoothie hats which we can do in readiness for the go ahead of Sainsbury's next campaign.
