Hi Pippa - the knitting pattern sites are addictive, aren't they? I have loads of projects in my head because, besides knitting for charity which I love doing, I also want to make as many presents for birthdays and Christmas as I can. I've just been out and the haberdashery shop tempted me in and I bought some googly eyes for toys, some beads just because I liked them and some chunky wool in gorgeous colours to make handbags for several nieces - I daren't go in there again for a few weeks!

Glad you like the teddy pattern - it's lovely, isn't it, and very quick to knit.

Yes mioliere they are very addictive, I am going to sort out my yarns to see if I have a suitable teddy bear colour :D

I sometimes do cross stitch and tapestry, so get totally wound up in what I`m doing, and get very tempted, especially when there is a sale on.

I think my favourite craft shops are in Ledbury. My sister lives in Gloucester which isnt far from there, when we go neither of us can resist having a look around, and always come out with our next project  (or 2)

Hi Pippa - I use a 4mm (UK) size hook, which is the one I usually use for double knitting wool and the hats have turned out fine! Thanks for the update - I'll add your hats to the totals now!

The first figures are for the STC (Save the Children) hats and the second is for the (IS) Innocent Smoothie hats which we can do in readiness for the go ahead of Sainsbury's next campaign.

    Hello all

I didn't think anyone knitted any more, but having seen this thread, I've decided to give it a go. I'm doing my first 8 inch square in brown, garter stitch, for the blanket.

I'd also like to knit little hats for our local SCBU at Southend University Hospital. I met one of the ward sisters yesterday in the local Morrison's - she recognised me instantly from when we were colleagues back in 1990-92 - she's in charge of one of the maternity wards next door to SCBU. Please point me in the direction of a simple pattern for premmie hats!

I used to knit as a hobby, years ago. In fact, before I met DH, the church I used to go to then had a Christmas bazaar and there was a hand-knits stall. One of the older ladies used to start knitting again after the bazaar ready for the next one! I helped her with it a couple of years, but it was such a disappointment. The jumpers, cardigans etc were priced so cheaply, less than the cost of wool, but the last time we did it we were told by women that 'children today won't wear hand-knitted things - they want sweat-shirts with the Lion King'. Or the colours were criticised, although we thought they were quite good enough to 'play out' in after changing from school clothes. We were laughed at - children don't 'play out' any more, we were told (mid-1990s). My elderly friend was so upset by all this she took the whole lot home, and at the time the local Fire Service was running charity trips to Bosnia. We sent the whole lot with them.

I don't watch TV very much, but I'm finding that it's nice to knit again while watching, or while listening to 'talking books' on my iPod.

Hi MargaretClare - welcome aboard. I just wanted to let you know that we have finished the 8" squares now because we have enough for the initial blankets we aimed for. We are now doing 7" squares so I hope you haven't done too many of the 8" ones! If you look at the very first post in this thread all the relevant info is there with addresses for posting squares, hats and so on. Here is the link to www.lovinghands.org.uk -it's a brilliant group which sends hats and other knitted items to deserving causes and, also, if you look here http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/Wooligan/ this is the link to our Yahoo group. If you apply to join I will 'approve' you!

I'm so glad you have joined us - we are all really enjoying the knitting and crochet and love the fact that we are helping those less fortunate than ourselves.

As I say, there is lots of info on the very first post on here but if you have any questions please feel free to post on here.
