I should count myself lucky! It's not very fair. Why don't they just start off doing it with brand new cars?

Exactly, when the new band G was announced last year there was a big thing made about it not being retrospective and applying only to new car purchases. This time around all the media seems to be focusing on the new one off forecourt charges, I dont understand why there is absolutely no mention aqnywhere of the fact that the new rules are retrospective and result in 90% of post 2001 car owner facing an increase in road tax. This is nothing more than a blatant tax grab.

I know! If anything, I would say that the post 2001 cars have lower emissions than the older ones.
I wasn't aware of this until I read this thread.

The reason it's retrospective is that it's not a "green" move at all - it's just a pure and simple tax grab.

Just to add, you can buy tax online.

My tax doesn't actually expire till 30th April.

    But I have gone here:

    http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/?SKIN=directgov

Type in my details, ordered a tax disc, job done.

    Got the following message:

"A new licence is not due for this vehicle until: 01 05 2008
PLEASE BE AWARE - THERE IS A CURRENT VALID TAX DISC IN FORCE FOR THIS VEHICLE. IF YOU PROCEED, THE DISC THAT WILL BE ISSUED WILL START FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE EXISTING MONTH RATHER THAN THE START OF NEXT MONTH.
If you apply for a tax disc today the Licence Start Date on the tax disc will be: 01 03 2008 "

Fine, no problem. Even without claiming the refund for the unused month of April, I'm still £30 up.

No need to go to post office at all.
NB Apparently this online method doesn't work if your insurance cover expires at the end of the month. Work out where your nearest licence-issuing post office is and use it instead...

Received my new tax ordered online on Saturday, today. Efficient service.

I have put it in the car, the old one is going off in the post tomorrow.

They come in April 1 2009.

I had that as well. I got hammered for owning a 90bhp Megane 1.6

As long as your sure, its just the Parkers car tax guide states that the new rates are effective in March 2009 although it does not specify the actual day.
  • Just read this on the Parkers website -
"From 1st March 2001 the annual car tax (or Vehicle Excise Duty - VED) rates are determined by CO2 emissions and type of fuel used. This information is on the car’s log book - also called a V5 document.
If your car was registered before the 1st March 2001 then car tax is based only on the engine size, with one rate for engine sizes up to and including 1549cc and one for engines over 1549cc"
so if I read this right if you drive an older car (before 2001) then the tax is based on engine size and not on CO2 emmisions?
I often think about The Samuel Vimes 'Boots' Theory Of Socio-Economic Injustice.

    Yes. Exactly so.

Leading to the stupid situation that people with identical cars, registered a few days apart, can pay significantly different amounts to tax their cars.
  • Brilliant stuff as usual!

Quick check please as tax starting in January / Feb wasn't mentioned.
I've got a 226g/km band F beast, with tax due in Jan 09.
Presumably, looking at your figures, I should renew now and save a small fortune next year?

Sorry for being a bit thick, it's been a very long day.

    Cheers

***** Edit - Sorry, have re-read spreadsheet, and I don't need to do anything as I'll still be buying at the lower cost in Jan next year. If I'm still wrong please shoot me. Thanks.**********
