1p Energy Saving Bulbs

My local Tesco had them in an unmarked cage. Little old lady helpfully pointed out that they were indeed a penny. So picked up 20 of each type (maximum allowed by the bulk purchase sign in store). Eagle eyed member of staff spotted me and pointed out it was restricted to 6 per customer. No signs to say this or anyhing else so I argued the toss. Senior member of staff came along and said as far as he was concerned as long as they were all sold he wasn't bothered who took them or how many they took. Told him I was going to distribute them between the local church and school. He helpfully filled my trolley with the remainder of the bulbs escorted me to the checkout and disappeared. Came back with a bundle of Tesco magazines from which he removed the MOCs and scanned.
School and church now the happy recipients of almost 300 lightbulbs for 17p. They will all be used. Each giant candelabra thingy in church takes 90 bulbs and there are 45 of them. Thats before you start on all the other lights.
Huge thanks to the original poster!Saving for a Spinning Wheel and other random splurges : £183.500 -

.........
Grabbed a selection of "6 year" ones and found a price check scanner. Whilst some of the "speciality" ones were full price, I found 9 varieties at 1p.
:rotfl: - includes BC, ES and SES fittings, 6w, 9w, 11w and 20w lamps, most of them "stick types" but also got some "spiral tube" ones - higher light output for a very small profile (fits some light fittings that the "normal" ones don't)
And YES, some SES (Small Edison Screw) ones do scan correctly at ONLY 1p (these fit some of my aquariums)
Yes, this just goes to prove my assumptions must be right.
I must have scanned every type of bulb ( "6 year" ) on sale in 2 stores - inc an Extra, and only managed to find one type at 1p - and that only in one of the stores - it scanned at full price in the other !!.
I will have to try and check again today and over the weekend to see if my stores actually manage to get their act together and either update their tills, or decides to let the customers have some:cool:0 -
Thanks for pointing this out!
I cleaned out the Tesco near my college of several kinds of bulbs - I checked them on the self-service checkout (much to a poor member of staff's dismay when I started cancelling items because they were at full price and the computer threw a wobbly), and in the end had 66 bulbs over a couple of trips. They weren't marked down on the shelves, and I bought 9, 11 and 20 watt sticks and 11w spirals. My parents have two houses and a *lot* of lights, most of which have normal bulbs in them, so they'll get used.0 -
Well now I have some type of explanation.
Went in big extra store again this morning.
Still no sel to show 1p, but did manage to find ONE type of bulb at 1p, and then an odd couple right at the back.
Spoke to another customer who came in especially because there is a advert in the Sun today about the 1p bulbs - but he had asked staff and told they had cleared shelves of reduced stock yesterday.
I said I had just managed to find one type, and he took some for himself and his elderly neighbours.
As we were stood chatting several sa's came rushing over and seemed very upset that there were any 1p ones on the shelves.
They said they had removed them all yesterday.
Female sa who presumably was 'responsible' for this yesterday, was then trying to explain to her disgruntled colleagues, why she had missed some (and left them on the shelf for the customers!!) by saying maybe more had been discounted today.
They were literally trying to get the bulbs back off us, saying they shouldn't have been out.
Other customer said "It has been advertised in the Sun today!!"
So they begrudgingly let us keep some - but only allowed 4 each
Clearly some store have taken the decision that Customers will not be allowed to buy any bulbs at 1p - yet head office have presumably spent money taking out adverts in the national papers to inform the public of the offerTesco Madness I think;)

found this article on the web, this explains it !
Tesco is to sell energy-saving light bulbs for just 1p each as the supermarket chases its target of selling 10 million “green” bulbs per year.
From today, customers will be able to buy up to four bulbs for 1p each. The bulbs use just a fifth of the energy of a standard bulb.
Tesco Greener Living category director Andrew Brocklehurst said: “Last year, Tesco pledged to work towards a fivefold increase in the number of low-energy bulbs we sell from two million to 10 million a year. We’re right on track to do that and we hope this fantastic offer will help us reach our target in the next couple of weeks.”
The offer is being made possible by support from EDF Energy as part of their Energy Efficiency Commitment which requires UK energy suppliers to promote improvements in domestic energy efficiency.0 -

Certainly, was a good thread that. Miss R&R too - forgetting any debate over inconsistent application, customer abuse or just the plain fact the price should be correct in the first place - I always felt personally it was a fair and appropriate recompense. Market leading.
Badly communicated, the price change happened before the offer was properly fed out to stores. 1p stock is always an indication that it is for write off. Personally I would rather sell it (I won't need to buy another razor blade this decade), but some stores would remove it from sale automatically.
Who or what was I before you came in to my life
I am not sure0
