we also do free activities or very cheap ones, it's harder at this time of the year as it's abit cold for the park/petting farm but theres alot of santa activitie days, if you live near an ikea they do a free soft play area for over 5's while you shop, saying that my kids love ikea and have more fun looking in the wee houses, climbing on the beds and trying out every sofa.....little amuses the innocent :)

IKEA is amazing. I don't care if that's sad; we're only in our early/mid twenties respectively and the only ones of our friends with kids and you should see the looks we get when we announce that IKEA is a 'day out' :rotfl:I love all of the displays and looking around and so does the little one.

I also find you can find great activities online, or we even just make household things fun - she's only three so loading the washing machine can be fun, making cakes and pies. The other day we went and collected leaves, played in the park and came home to make a picture out of them...after Christmas we'll cut out the pictures from Xmas cards and make tags with a hole punch and ribbon...MSE and fun too :)

if you have a fire you can collect pinecones and burn them in your fire, they burn quickly but throw out alot of heat we don't acually have a fire anymore :( (it's pretty high up the list for when were buying tho) it's not worth a special trip to collect them but if your in the park anyway you might aswell :money:

my kids have made santas with imprints of there hands at school, they cut out there handprints, coloured there thomb and bottom of there hand red (and put cotton wool on the end of there thumb for the bobble on the hat) the middle pink and drew a face and put of googly eyes, then the fingers are white for the beard it's really cute so i'm gonna do it with our youngest after xmas ready for next year

I feel its going to take me ages. But I have joined the local sailing club for £200 a year and invested in a Topper a small sailing boat for my son and I to use.

I think its all about looking at what we want and what we need. I bought my sons presents with money from old mobiles sold Mazuma. I have my deposit for my rented property on its way back so I will keep that for emergencies. :)

Well done! If you don't mind me asking how did you get £200 for moving accounts?! Best I've seen is £100.

I'm afraid the offer is no longer available. It was with the Co-op Bank. Posted on MSE Forums: http://forum.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?p=49207613

samtoby you seem well on your way, lucky you have such a lovely mum; I'm sure you'll save up in no time. We're also trying to keep to free activities and rather than a bought holiday we're going to drive out to one of my mum's holiday homes in France/Portugal (last year we spent loads on our wedding and holiday so this year is time to be frugal!) Anyway, well done :T

Tara 54k is very impressive! You only missed by a smidgen...I'd still consider it a goal achieved!

Thanks - yes, I am very proud of it all the same! :)

It's nearly pay day so I hope that I will be enough to put a fair chunk away. I was so proud of myself I spent only the vouchers I received and bought work clothes with them so I do not need to buy any this year. I guess I could of sold the vouchers off thinking about it; but it was £40.00, I guess if I think about money being,'only £40.00 then I won't get far!' :P

Hi All, thought I'd join in this thread. DH and I have been saving up for a deposit for the last 2 years. Both of us are shop workers, and are on relatively low incomes so it's been a struggle at times!

My plan has been so far:

    Property Value £100,000
    15% Deposit of £15,000
Fees, etc £5000 (Overestimated here deliberately)

DH also puts aside £100 a month in a company share save scheme, which we have been doing for almost 2 years. We were planning that cash as an emergency fund, and don't count it as part of the savings.

I'm hoping to have saved up the deposit by 2013, and spend the rest of that year saving up for the fees. My resolution for 2012 is to save a little bit more every month, by 'sweeping' left over cash from last months pay into the savings account. Hopefully we can get there in the next 24 months!

We have saved up £9400 so far, 47% of the way there!
    Happy saving!
