quick question guys? what rate do you get if you get money out abroad using a Nationwide card in a bank's ATM?

we are off to Greece on Sunday and was wondering this, also where is the best rate on the high street to get a small amount of Euro's to 'tide' us over while we find a ATM?

    Thanks in advance.

do u mean what fx rate will you get when you withdraw? (If so, no idea - it will depend on where the fx market is at the particular time you make your withdrawal)

    or

do you mean what will you be charged for withdrawaing?

Hi, yeah i meant that. I take it it will be better than getting currency from the high street not withstanding a massive leap from either in one direction or other that is.

Hence also why everyone say's get it from a Nationwide using ATM abroad.

Nationwide don't charge fees for withdrawing money abroad (£2.50 - £3.00) with other banks nor load the exchange rate in Europe (usually 2.75% elsewhere)

So, if you were to withdraw €100 on a normal card at an exchange rate of 1.1 it would cost you

    100 / (1.1 * (1-0.0275)) + 3 = £96.48

    with Nationwide

    100 / 1.1 = £90.91

    so a saving of £5.57!

I'm going away in 10 days and applied for my Nationwide account last week (no idea why I've never thought of it before - but those £5s must have added up over the years). I just hope it is opened in time. I'm going to keep my main bank account and only transfer my estimated spending money onto the Nationwide account. That way I am unfortunate enough to have the card stolen or cloned then it limits the amount I can lose and doesn't give the baddies access to my main account.

Some alternatives to changing it at the bank/post office:

    1) Keep it for next time
    2) Sell it on Ebay (e.g. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/40-EURO-IN-NOTES-LEFTOVER-HOLIDAY-MONEY_W0QQitemZ200355570144QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Coins_Banknotes_GL?hash=item2ea61f61e0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65:12|66:2|39:1|72:1684|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50)
    3) Sell it to a friend who is going to Euroland soon.
    4) Some shops in the UK (M&S I think) accept Euros at the till.

Personally, I just keep any leftovers
