I don't know if I am being a bit cynical here, but I think all these news releases are being timed.

A week pound helps exporters, and as we are currently in a recession, business has slowed, with all businesses need as many orders as they can get.

We seem to get a 'bad news' story issued on almost a weekly basis, so that as soon as the pound shows any sign of improving strength - it drops straight back down. Last week Mervyn King saying the governmnet needed to sort out a debt repayment plan, this week the UK economy retraction (1st quarter).

Are all these releases being timed to keep the pound low? And what else do we have coming up?

Actually the Pound is much stronger against the Euro at the moment than it has been for most of 2009.

All I'm waiting for is the magic 1.2, but it never seems to get there - that's why I'm frustrated.

I like my theory though ;)

So Inspector, what other 'bad' news announcements have we got coming up in the next few weeks (my euros are required at the beginning of August)?

Prepaid Euro card - I want to get one of these for my 15 year old travelling to Spain with another family shortly - as far as I can see from Research the ICE one seems the best as regards charges (more importantly the lack of) but where I can get a card in her name. My only query tho is: it can only be topped-up online using a debit card (or some other card) so won't my bank (Barclays) see that as a one of those expensive types of transaction and lump lots of fees on me? Believe it or not I tried asking Barclays and go someone on the phone who said she isn't trained in that! I'd be grateful to here from anyone who may know the answer about charges, many thanks

many many things, too many to mention, and some more important than others....
but each month, on set days, you are going to get figures released for Inflation, Unemployment, Retail Sales, BoE meeting & minutes from that meeting, House Prices (from various different sources), among countless others...

then on top of that, all those numbers over again for EuroZone countries and the US.

all these figures will have an effect on the exchange rate (good or bad)

    never a dull moment....
