Someone has suggested taking US$ and changing them abroad but my fag packet calculation shows this would make no difference. ?

It shouldn't make 'no difference'. You should be worse off doing this through two lots of charges, hidden or open.
  • Thanks for your responses - obviously it was only a fag packet calc and took no account of commission charges - clearl by converting twice I would be paying double commission. I believe the phrase "Commission Free" should be banned in foreign exchange establishments. It's not "Commission Free" at all it's a discounted exchange rate some way below the bank rate so to call it "Commission Free" is nothing short of a misrepresentation. **slides soap box back under desk**

I've been thinking about this myself. Is it really that expensive to use my Barclays debit card to get the equivalent of say £100 from an ATM in Switzerland? I don't like the idea of carrying a large sum of money around with me whilst travelling, hardly ever carry more that £20 cash when at home. Would it be best to pay by debit card in shops, train tickets etc rather that draw Swiss francs from a ATM? Would the charge made for using a debit card outweigh the cost of changing sterling into Swiss francs and back again?

I've been investigating this as we are off to Spain in August. Very stupid question.......are the ATMS the same abroad, do you just tap in the amount of euros you want? And are the instructions in Spanish??:confused::confused:

No, drawing euros out of an ATM will be cheaper than changing it at the Post Office. Far cheaper if, as LBC says, you have a Nationwide ....................... credit card.

Hope you didn't really mean to say that !

Out of a local hole-in-the-wall using a Nationwide debit card on a Flexaccount

It's true, using a Flex Account card you'll get a better deal. It's free to withdraw (and pay i think? but i'm not sure) with it abroad, love it! haha :)
