If it makes you that angry you could always stay at home, or book holidays outside the Eurozone ;)

yeah i wish we'd have got the euros at the time of booking the holiday - over 12 months ago oh well......makes you wonder whether it is better to stay at home lol

M&S are selling at 1.2008 when I checked just now, I'm guessing they charge a commission as well so you're better off with Going Places.

Still its a very poor rate compared to last year :(

Interbank rate is 1.25 Euro - £1. This is the rate you would get TODAY using a fees free debit card such as Nationwide's to draw out an ATM , (ignoring any offers for dynamic currency conversion)
    The calculator below
    http://corporate.visa.com/pd/consumer_services/consumer_ex_rates.jsp
can give you an effective rate for other cards if you know the loading % and fees your bank charges.
    Compare that to
Travelex (1.216) and TEG (1.225) in order to use if neccessary, the Travelex best price guarantee, as detailed in MY GUIDE.
Also worth a look are your modern day pawn shops, ie Cash Convertors , Cheque Centre, Cash Generator etc etc.
Ive found their rates comparable to (& sometimes better than) Travelex online.
Most high streets have one, so there really is no excuse for being stung at the Post Office or travel agents these days.
  • It may be too late for you now, but I have always used my Nationwide Flexaccount debit card to get Euros out when I get to my destination. Nationwide don't charge for the transaction and I'm sure that I read somewhere that you get a much better rate than going to a money changer in the UK. I also only use my Nationwide Gold Card for credit card transactions abroad for the same reason.

we are off to the netherlands next month, and i have been buying my euros at the post office.
You get a slightly better rate if you buy over £500 worth.
in my opinion its better to buy in UK and have them ready to spend when you arrive, just say for instance you needed a taxi from the airport.
Im sure changing £ into euros in another country would cost you extra.

No, drawing euros out of an ATM will be cheaper than changing it at the Post Office. Far cheaper if, as LBC says, you have a Nationwide debit or credit card.

As regards getting a cab when you arrive, I haven't found an airport yet that doesn't have an ATM.
  • Hi,

I travel to Europe quite a lot for holidays and obviously the £ v the Euro is shocking at the moment. Anyone got any ideas about how to get a few more Euros for your pound? Someone has suggested taking US$ and changing them abroad but my fag packet calculation shows this would make no difference. I'm looking at the nationwide current account and the post office credit card - any other bright ideas?

Getting a rate that's better than the interbank rate (as offered by Nationwide) just isn't going to happen. Any route (e.g. via an intermediate currency) that gives a better rate than the direct rate represents an arbitrage opportunity (i.e. an opportunity to make money at no risk). Major players in the financial markets are constantly looking for arbitrage opportunities and as soon as one appears the amount of trade it generates causes prices to adjust very quickly to close the opportunity.

You can of course hedge against future movements by buying a large quantity of Euros and keeping them in a Euro denominated account.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning
