You would actually lose a lot more via Travelex. Those are the online rates, prepaid with a debit card.
If you walk into Travelex at the airport, they are going to give you a complete kicking- the rate is a good 10-15% worse.
Best to try and get Thomsons holiday shop to price match.
These days I use "Cash Convertors" or "Cash Generator". They normally give a walk in rate as good as Travelex online
Today I got $1.935 from Cash Generator, the Travelex online rate is just under$1.93

If you bought euros with dollars you would get

    $100 = 59.91 euros
    $100 = £51.83
    £51.83 = 64.43euros

(all prices based on todays values on travelex.co.uk and travelex.com)

therefore going down the dollar route you would lose 4.52euros per $100.

    Hope this answers your question

Has anyone found any factual articles about this so we can see how much of a problem this might be? Also any suggestions for where to get the best rate? I usually go to the Post Office, but maybe it would be better to change money when I get there?

I find M&S usually have the best rates where I live, but of course it depends on what is available to you. No comission either.

yep m&s are very good rates but as we live right by a holiday hypermarket we phone for the marks' rate on the day and then they price match with no commision. this has been the most reliable for years
  • Is it not better just to exchange when you get to where your going as several places we have gone tend to offer commission free and a better exchange rate
  • Does anyone know if there will be a likely increase in the pound to Euro before August, the rate is shocking at the moment and want to hold on to see if it gets better beforei change money? any usefull information would be much appreciated.

    Who can say?

Why not buy some now and some later and that way you minimise your losses whichever way it goes.
  • it's almost a certainty that the euro to pound rate will change in some way or the other in the next few months ....if i could predict what might happen i could get a job in the City
