Whilst I was mainly referring to drawing cash by debit card and buying by credit card, in fact using any credit card (usually 2.5% cash withdrawal plus 2.75% foreign exchange loading) would be slightly cheaper than changing money at the Post Office (7%). The Nationwide credit card would just be 2.5% cash withdrawal, so much cheaper. Nationwide debit card nil, obviously, so far cheaper.

You forgot the interest, which is added to the sum withdrawn from an ATM on a credit card, from the instant the machine gives you the money. The "up to 8 weeks interest free on purchases" becomes - "up to 8 weeks at very high interest rate on cash" !

Even the Nationwide charges 1.737% per month on cash withdrawls.

PS: I knew what you meant in your original post, others may not have
  • Going abroad in a few weeks and am wondering if it's best to buy Euros before I go or buy them in the resort? The exchange rate is terrible here at the moment!

you might be lucky and find an exchange bureaux abroad who haven't got a clue what the exchange rate is and give you buckets of extra money...unlike UK money exchangers who keep an eye on it

To the OP: Yes the exchange rate here is terrible but you will find that is just rip-off Britain for you. The nice foreign folks will give you about 30-40% more for your money when you get there

    in the same situation.

or should i jsut do as normal, put pounds into Nationwide and remove abroad?

Would go with the Nationwide option as you're unlikely to get a better rate

You will get a better rate abroad, but not 30-40% better. It is usually 1-2 cents better than the best rate in the UK which is hardly worth the hassle of finding a decent exchange place abroad.

Withdrawing from a Natiowide FlexAccount (not Flexi....) is the best way to go as you will get InterBank rates and no fees.

the thing is... i'm not going abroad for quite a while, and also, i'm sure when customs realise that you're not human, and a bear that like throwing squirrels, they might not be that impressed..

and a paw, with gloves.. now that is just twisted..

anyway, i'm off to roll around in my dubloons now, because i'm sure bears can't legally own anything! :D

I'm using some bloke in Nigeria who can exchange Euros at 100 to the £. Funny thing is I sent him a thousand quid, a couple of weeks ago, and not heard anything from him. I expect he must be very busy.
