Colour Run Disaster

We've got a leak somewhere in the washing machine (actually I think it's coming from where the flexihose drains out of the machine into the outlet pipe) which we get every so often - I'm assuming the pipe is a bit gunked up. If I had to wait for him indoors to sort it out I'd not get any washing done for weeks, so I have to grin and bear it and just do the washing anyway.

Because we have two kitchens (one nearly finished that is in what used to be the dining room, and the original kitchen behind that which is used really only because the dishwasher and washing machine are still in there) I tend to just chuck loads of washing on the floor in front of the washing machine and then do it in batches. Because of the leak it means that the washing on the floor has soaked up the leaked water ...

... anyway, one of his work shirts (blue chambray/cotton) has been on top of something red and now where they have been together some red has run into his work shirt. How am I going to get it out? He's not best pleased (serves him right, he should've sorted out the machine for me), particularly as he's only had the shirts for a couple of weeks.

Advice much appreciated!

hiya, i had similar problem recently, tried various products, but the one that worked was the Glo colour run remover, you can get it from wilkinsons or its cheaper at home bargains. you must not let the shirt dry tho until the run colour has been removed, for best results.
    hope this helps,
    good luck
    Nice to save.

I've used the Dylon sheets but I can't remember exactly what they're called as I took them out of the box to store them in a waterproof bag under the sink.
I know it says 'Color Protection' & 'Anti-Color Transfer' on the front of the box.

You put 1 sheet (although I cut all mine in half so just use half each time) into the machine either when you're doing a mixed colour wash or when you want to rewash an article where colour has run onto it. The sheet then attracts any 'bleeding' dye. ;)

But I agree with the last poster - you need to keep the article wet before using.
  • Thanks both - I've got a vague idea that I might have one of the colour run sachets somewhere that I bought yonks ago - I must have a look.

Well, as I put his work shirts on to wash last night before I went to bed, no doubt the floor is still nice and wet and hence his dyed shirt!

  • I have some sheets which you put in the achine with your clothes and they stop the colour running onto the others, and also keep the whites whiter. They attract the dye and hold it and they work really well, they are white and similar in texture to J cloths, but a bit starchier

They are about 2 pounds for 10 , ao i was wondering if anyone knows of some thing that I could use as an alternative??
  • Anyone know how to do this

Nope. Not heard of anything better or cheaper. Sorry.

  • Would it be worth experimenting with some scruffy clothes to see if the cloths still do the biz when chopped in half/quarters?

I wonder wether they would still work if you soaked them in a mild bleach solution(or vaanish) to return them to white again? If it is just the nature of the material that absorbs the colour, then once they had been rinsed out to remove traces of bleach, they could possibly work a second time which would halve the price?
I havent used them myself so cant say wether it would or not.
  • I thought they were much cheaper than that - I bought some in Tesco the other week (checking receipt still in purse) - they cost £2.73 and I am fairly sure there are 25 sheets in there.

Your only other option (and the easiest way as far as I can tell) is to make sure you don't mix your colours ...

Sorry can't help as I've never even heard of these cloths! Mind you I've got blinkered vision when I go in shops now (unless its one I only go to occasionally) so I would probably have missed them!
