  • wow, excellent list, just 1 thing I would suggest is not to install too many of them at the same time, they can block each other out

    Computer security is it really worth the money any more? They dont claim to be 100% effective anyhow! You have got to get your computer checked once in a while for problems. Think of it like it was a car. It needs oil and water and service now and again.

    A condom isn't 100% effective, doesn't mean you shouldn't use one. If it's 'not worth the money' use a free one, simple. And I've never had to have my computer checked once in a while, if that is the case with you then I suggest either you security setup is wrong or your browsing habits are.
  • Which (if any) of the scanners listed are suitable for Linux? (specifically, Ubuntu). Please can somebody let me know?

    Thank you
  • I recommend to use the Online Comodo scanner

    Sorry quick question, how long roughly does a sophos virus removal tool- scan take? I think I have something nasty which I am currently getting help for on another thread, but the virus I have blocked me from running many of the suggestions on this sticky thread.

    I had now got Sophos to run and it has already been about an hour and whilst I am sure I am imagining it (it has been a very tiring morning PC wise) I keep seeing the same things being scanned and I wonder if it has been got at by the virus.

    Edit: I think it must just be thorough as some stuff has flashed by that I don't recall seeing before.

  • Hi

    I was checking my mums laptop today - just to make sure everything was ok as its all new to her - and I noticed that Webroot protection stated that it had been running for 1 day 7 hours and so many minutes - I thought this a bit strange as she has had the laptop about a fortnight.

    Anybody know why this is... is it simply that the core program may have been updated or must it have been manually stopped and restarted ?

    Thanks for any help - I am just being cautious as I dont want any disasters to happen and several nieces and nephews have access to the laptop and are keen to show thier grannie whats what on the interweb thingy.

    You'd probably get more help starting your own thread rather than posting in an unrelated thread ;)
  • For the person who asked about a scanner for linux / ubuntu;

    While it's not completely inconceivable that a linux based machine "might" get infected, the odds are low. Very low.

    Most people have trouble reconciling the difference between the *need* on Windows, and the joyous indifference on linux / ubuntu :)

    Most virus scanners for linux exist only for machines which are running a mail server for Windows, and even then, only to stop a virus aimed at attacking a Windows machine from being passed on.

    Whereas a virus for Windows will be using the same attack vectors to gain access to as many machines as possible, the variety of software on a linux system to do the same general tasks makes such a specifically targetted attack almost pointless.

    Go enjoy your PC !
