This is worth writing to say, the Daily Telegraph about - or Which?

Let's say you are pushing the envelope a bit - who knows maybe you collected coupons from friends. Whatever. Tesco needs to have a rational policy integrated into it's checkouts. That system will simply say that your coupons fall within the rules - or don't. If Tesco has developed a coupon system full of tempting loopholes, abuse of customers is not the way to manage it.

I would recommend going to you local newspaper.

Imagine it now...you standing outside your local Tesco store with a glum look on your face and your clubcard in your hand.

Local papers love this kind of story and big organisations hate bad pr.

    Good Luck

I suspect this will never happen. At the end of the day Tesco is at best walking a very fine line with it's suppliers and worst possibly defrauding them (by claiming vouchers for products not purchased). To publish and display a national policy would bring the whole can of worms out in to the open, and close the creative use of coupons once and for all.

Reading through some of the "Tesco Policy" emails from customer services in this thread, I suspect that some CS responses particularly the spend 100%+ and refund if value exceeds one, relate to Tesco reward vouchers rather than manufacturer discount vouchers.

My opinion on this whole sorry saga is probably different from more vocal members so will not post it here for fear of being flamed.

"Did you point out that all their staff need urgent training in this v hazy area of tesco company policy?"

    ...and basic respect.

Just in case people have lost sight of it (and for those only joining the thread now), the story so far as I see it is this:

    (i) Igloo committed no crime, merely stuck to the coupon policy advice issued by Tesco head office. A company's head office is superior to any and all of its snottery managers who might make up their own rules on coupon use because they are on some power trip

(ii) calling Igloo greedy for 'exploiting' Tesco's invitation to buy its goods at ridiculously low prices through massive coupon use is insulting and would be irrelevant even if it WERE true. Greed, if any Moneysaver gives in to it, is not a crime either and it does not give Tesco staff the right to unlawfully detain Igloo or any of us. Incidentally, if greed were a crime, we would not be having this discussion as Tesco's senior staff would be in jail and the entire hugely profitable company would have closed long before Igloo had ever set foot in its store. Tesco was a business and not a charity last time I looked

(iii) a more pertinent question might be whether, as a previous poster mentioned, Tesco itself is committing fraud by asking product manufacturers to remunerate it for accepting coupons against goods it has not actually sold

(iv) the store manager and security guard behaved in what I view as an unacceptable manner, going far beyond what was required and probably breaking the law by falsely imprisoning Igloo.

While Tesco's policy from store to store might be inconsistent, its staff have no excuse for failing to uphold a consistent level of respect for customers and their rights under the law - specifically, their right not to be detained illegally.

Igloo said the manager and guard said she could not leave until she handed over her card. Their behaviour intimidated her into staying put.

If they intended to detain her legally on suspicion of some crime (and what law did she break exactly?), they ought to have called the police. They didn't call the police because they knew she had done nothing illegal.

Incidentally, as a previous poster said:

    (i) the card itself is just a piece of plastic with no intrinsic value and the manager could have just closed Igloo's account instead of demanding it back

(ii) when Igloo refused to hand over the card, the manager and guard had no right to continue demanding it. There are proper means of recovering property through the civil courts if Tesco was determined to do so.

The police should at least have a word with the two staff members (and it sounds like they are interested in doing so, Igloo - but you must make a formal complaint before they can).

If, after hearing the employees' side of the story and viewing the CCTV footage Tesco is obliged to hand over on your request, the police think there is a case to answer, they can submit a file to the director of public prosecutions.

If they believe your story but think that pursuing a conviction would not be in the public interest, they can still issue the Tesco employees with a warning about their behaviour and keep a record of it in case they try the same stunt again with you or anyone else.

At the very least, I think these two bully-boys need a good talking to from their superiors and the police.

Again, best wishes to Igloo and I hope you get an apology at least.
