The mint sauce is terrible. The salted peanuts are nice and the fromage frais are better than any other value range we've had.

Love the mint sauce, especially with mushy peas.

Tried the tea bags again (didn't like them a few years ago) and they are much, much better.

Bargain at 28p for 80p, a third of a penny a cup, and also fairtrade.

Don't you find the mint sauce really watery? Even with a vigorous shake (of the jar) before opening I can't do with it.

Read something a while back about value range tea being made from the floor sweepings of the teabag factory, something they used to have to pay to dispose of. Suppose if it tastes OK there's much worse goes on in the food industry though! :D

I bought the teabags yesterday, when I noticed they were Fairtrade, and on the grounds that at 28p I wouldn't lose much on them-and they're really nice. Even my son commented how good they smelled when I opened the box.

Had the Basics Hot chocolate last night and it is FAR NICER than Options and Cadburys etc. Its in a bag so you have to reseal or tip it into a containter but its lovely!

Hubby had the breakfast wheats ( Weetabix ) and said the only thing wrong with them is you cant fit 4 in a bowl!! Lovely basically!
  • Agreed about the mint sauce - putrid! Easily our worst basics experience so far. A new one for us - basics cappucino. Mrs C loves it, comes in a resealable bag and makes approx 18 mugs for £1.86. Fairtrade as well:beer:

In my experience, the mozzarella ball is by far the best item the basics range has to offer.

The lamb breast deserves honourable mention, since despite being a cheap cut of meat it still tastes pretty good. The only drawback is that you probably have to work out how to remove the significant layer of fat. If you're roasting it's fine. Serves 4.

I'll have to try the coffee, tea, and biscuit range. Of the first, incidentally, I've noticed a dire lack of availability of Ferrero Pocket Coffee (Google it) in this country, so this might be an opportunity to make my own.

You can find out more from the blog which I have linked in [STRIKE]my signature[/STRIKE] page 46 of this thread, it appears that the moderators are not too happy about my blog link signature and have removed it. :)
  • i mix the mint sauce with a bit of sugar and vinegar (don't ask me why my mum always did it when we were kids) and its fine like that, don't like it on its own. though it is nice mixed with gravy for a mint gravy for lamb.

Agree with the hot choc, we bought some yesterday and i think its so nice, it reminds me of galaxy hot choc. My son loves the weetabix too and their instant hot oat cereal is lovely too.
