Tried the cheesecake and it was quite respectable ( and i'm a cheesecake addict!!) but the base was a little drier than some. Went well with the bargain Ben and Jerrys!!
Bought frozen basic peas this week- first time we'd seen them.
Regularly buy the curry and pasta sauces- they're ideal as a base which you can add other flavours to.
Also buy the basics peppers, apples, carrots, spuds, cauli, garlic- again no problems.
Nice to see them expanding the range, noticed some pain au chocolat at the weekend but managed to resist them. Has anyone tried these yet and are they any good?0 -
I tried the tea bags for the first time yesterday and thought they were minging!!! Worth a try though. Curry sauce in the cupboard to try another day.0

Can someone tell are the basics teabags are round or square? The other half reckons he can only drink Tetley so if the basics are square I can't secretly swap them!
I love this thread btw, I am a basics convert because of it!
Good stuff we have tried:
chopped tomatoes
chocolate chip muffins
kitchen roll
tissues
apples, I didn't like them but kids did
toilet roll
biscuits - all of them
broccoli
sponge scourers
blueberries
mild cheddar
salmon fillet
all purpose cloths
cheese and tomato pizza
fish fingers
tinned corned beef
flour
yorkshire puddings
dishcloths
strawberry jam
spaghetti (dried)
mayonnaise
peas
jelly
frozen sausage rolls
vinegar
grapes
Not so good:
refuse sacks - I thought they were rubbish (ha!), just too thin
bread - a bit too dry, we prefer Kingsmill!
I would love to try the chocolate but it has a may contain nuts warning and my son is allergic :-/ (I don't buy anything with a warning on)0 -

Oh no  They're rectangular. Can you make him some cups without him seeing the teabags and see if he tastes any difference?0 -

Hmmm he'd be very suspicious if I offered to make him tea:D Although I do make him one occasionally if he asks nicely so it might be worth stashing some!0 -

That's the way to cure a brand snob!I've done it with all my family by using this method. In your case, just use the basics tea bags when you are making the tea - I bet you he makes absolutely no comment, good or bad. Let this continue for a few weeks then hit him with the basics tea bags in the caddy. The conversation will probably go summat like this:
Him: 'What's these tea bags?'
You: 'Sainsburys basics'
Him: 'But I only drink Tetley's'
You: 'That's funny, every time i've made you a cup of tea in the past few weeks it's the basics you've been drinking and not one comment. Did you not notice a difference? They are less than a quarter of the price of Tetley's'
Hubby slinks off with tail firmly between legs.Call me Carmine....
HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??0 -
We have tried some of the basics range,
Good:
Tinned peas
Chocolate mouses
Yoghurts
Fromage Frais
Washing Powder
Biscuits
Squash
Fruit Juice (In Cartons)
Stir Fry Veg
Tinned Tomatos
Museli
We used to shop at asda, tescos and morrisons as we have all 4 large supermarkets within a 10 minute drive but now only use Sainsburys as there basics range is the best and is competitive on price now.0 -
After lurking here for a while, I thought I should step forward and present my blog. I was actually encouraged by this forum post to actually see if I can put together meals or dishes using nothing but Sainsbury's Basics items, with sensible exceptions (like cooking oil, which has no Basics equivalents). The blog is found at:

I try to update when I can afford the time, so far this has averaged 1-2 times a week. I'm writing from the perspective of a resident from overseas, hopefully this would explain some of the more unusual paragraphs in the blog. Hope this will be entertaining, if not informative..0
