I don't buy the tinned tomatoes anymore, considering what they used to cost I won't pay even the basics price - a squirt of tomato puree instead e.g. in chilli is much much cheaper and does the job.
You must like your chilli quite "dry" then. No way is tom puree going to bulk out the sauce unless you use about 6 tubes.

I use it for tomatoey flavour, not bulk - add moisture and bulk with other things. But good point, depends on your personal taste.
  • I tried the Basics bleach the other day.

Pretty good flavour. I drank a 2L bottle and when blind for 3 days so at 19p I'd say that was value for money! :cheesy:
  • A new one for us - basics midget gems. Best midget gems we have ever tasted, seriously. Soft, very fruity and no nasty after taste. Billy bargain.

We love the midget gems, no horrid licorice ones to spoil the fruit flavours. You should also try the caramel toffees 1carminestocky, they're lovely aswell. :T

  • Have just had the basics tinned syrup sponge with a packet of tesco value custard. The custard was nice. The syrup sponge tasted like it was made out of either stale pork scratchings or gone off lard. Very peculiar. The first basics item that i won't be buying again.
  • We love the basics mozzerella, jaffa cakes and chopped tomatoes, thought the apple and orange juce was ok too.

Thanks to Jamie b****y Oliver ads and all the folks on here, I'm now finding many basics items completely sold out when I shop.

There's nothing worse than having to pay double the price or more on the next range up!!!!

tried the value rice. oh it is awful. no taste and one gloppy lump. i've tried lots of different wayt to cook but i just can't seem to make it nice. it is so starchy. one items won't be buying again. however think it is proberly the first so can't be bad really.
We use the basic rice and must agree it can go gloopy. But what we do is after it's cooked and drained we pour freshly boiled water over it to get rid of the gloopy mess (whilst still in the colander), seems to have worked for us (still not a patch on the basmati we used to get in the old days of cheap prices )

I bought the fabric conditioner today for 50p and will use that in my next wash, if it's any good I'll keep getting it.
