They do it by subsidising its cost. Even though its now 35p its still an absolute and utter billy bargain. A loss leader, a way of getting you into the store. There are others in the basics range that are clearly subsidised also - the 4p, low fat curry sauce, for instance.

  • Hi there, I am a sainsburys basics convert, the quality of everything far surpasses mr T and all the others, Carmine....are you paid to advertise for Sainsburys? or do you work for them in any way? just thought I would ask as you seem to be truly converted!! However I have tried these items and thought I would post as this thread converted me!!!:)
    Tomato Chutney-fantastic
Tinnied fruit-why is it only Mr S does it in juice, fantastic price and quality
All fruit and veg-just like you would get off an allotment!
Curry Sauce-Brilliant for stretching out the sunday chicken, was nice and spicy although not sure about the sultanas, sieved them out :(
Chicken wings-£1.33 for 12, and by far meatier than other ones we have tried.
Mince-Good value, behaved like mince, not like some other stuff you get that acts like rubber
Frozen yorkshires-just like aunt bessies midweek minis
I am looking forward to doing my next shop budgeting, as I have been made redundant...and we have eaten really well me OH and son on sainsburys basics range, the only thing we don't seem to be able to compromise on is bread.....all value ranges we find really dry very quickly:) Hope this helps someone!

Hi katylou6180, on the life of my wife and kids I have no connection with the company whatsoever. I just am so delighted at what it's done for our shopping budget and want as many people as possible to also benefit. :money:

PS Agreed about the mince - we have always tried to avoid 'value' mince on account of its 'rubbery' nature. My wife swears by the basics mince (we have always poured away the fat with any mince we have used) and it's formed the basis for some lovely meals, i.e. shepherds pie, spag bol, chilli etc.

    Not so keen on

Basics Onion Chutney, I didn't not like it, just a bit too sweet for me, but OH likes it.

Absolutely brilliant, soo pleased I found out about the Basics range, this will definatley bring down the cost of my shopping bill over time, the kids at first did pull a face and asked if we were poor:rolleyes: But I explained, no, just prefer to spend less on food shopping so we can do more fun things:D They have been happy with all they have tried soo far:beer:

Thank you so much to all have contributed to this thread, it took me a few days to read through it all and I am sure that just because of this thread, I will be saving a whole lot of dosh and its down to you guys and Saisnbos of course:beer::beer: This really will make a huge difference to us, thank you thank you thank you x

  • I have been converted to Basics for a while but new items keep appearing and, of course, I have to try them! Maybe they have been there all along and I just never noticed them! Anyway - tried the frozen mixed berries this week - £1 a bag and delicious. Also 6 Chocolate drizzled Ice Cream Cones for £1 - the ice cream much, much nicer than that in the choc ices.

Well we have just come back from MrS..bought loads of stuff,i adore galaxy and Cadbury choc,so was wary of choc bar,but i just scoffed half a bar straight away!:EasterBunSuper.
Had shortcake biscuits, very good, shortbread fingers are a little too sugary and not buttery enough, but acceptable, teabags are primed ready for use by tea expert hubby, rich tea digestive, caramel choc wafers and strawberry cereal bars all waiting to be opened and assessed!
I did ask at my branch, (sains ripley derbyshire) if the "try basics range and if you dont like it money back" stood there, 3 staff looked at me blankly and said they didnt know/wasnt told if it was, so they called up top manager and they said yes it stands. So you cant lose!:T

OH bought me some basics chocolate digestives and I didn't know until he told me. I think he said 38p. They are a bit smaller than Mcvitties but they taste great.
  • I can't wait to tell people about my food bargains.
Only problem is if everyone followed my advice the price will shoot up :(

I bought some basics chicken breasts to try........cooked them this morning to go into a curry. Must say water came out of them something that doesn't happen with my Costco chicken breasts so don't think I shall be buying them again. Have bought a basics whole chicken to try too so will let you know how that goes.

Right cooked the whole chicken the weekend and I think I cooked it a little too long.....it only just about fit into my Le Crueset :o
I must say despite it being a larger bird weight wise than my uaual large chicken I didn't get significantly more meat off the bird (and that's taking into account my slight overcooking :o).
Soooooo jury is still out on the basics whole chicken. Meat tasted OK though so no complaints on that score.
