That's something I never ever looked at, the wrapping. I looked at the prices.. :)
  • I admit I felt the same way. I actually felt guilty giving it to the kids. I have learnt my lesson and I know nutrienally thay are now better off, esp as I do a lot more home baking (the cinnamon buns dont count LOL)

I think we've learned a lot from this thread and cut our bills considerably by gradually trying and switching. Had a few failures but not many. I had thought I was reasonably price aware but am amazed just how much branded stuff we were using. Still quite a way to go and who cares if my cupboards are a mass of orange and white, my boys have accepted it and in fact seem to have taken up the challenge and are not afraid to admit they've generally been really impressed so far with what we've tried.

We are rather keen on the basics jaffa cakes and had a pleasant surprise last night to find they are now down to 38p (from 60p which was way better than branded versions anyway). Fantastic for 24 rather tasty morsels.

ok not food but today bought basics glasses, 99p for 4 as opposed to £4 for 4, they are thick and absolutely fine!
also basics bin bags and kitchen roll do the job
Assuming we're talking about drinking glasses (!), I would just say "don't wash them in the dishwasher". If you do, they will gradually develop a cloudy band around the top half of the glass. Admittedly they may be different now - we bought ours for Xmas 07.

My old Basics glasses have gone the same. I have thrown a few away as they look so scuddy. I think I would rather pay a bit more than wahs up by hand. Too lazy. The free coke and Grolsh glasses wash up very well in the dishwasher. On a more money saving note.

  • Just seen the new Jamie Oliver Sainsbugs ad and correct me if I'm wrong but is this the first time he's mentioned the basics range? Seems to me that Sainsburys have decided to really push the basics range now. It wouldn't surprise me at all if this thread hasn't influenced them in that decision (believe me, they will have people monitoring this thread - it's very cheap market research for them).

PS A new one for me - pickled onions. 31p. Was surprised by their strength! Excellent!

I use 2 tins of Basics Tomato Soup as a sauce on my Pasta bakes, as its not as thick as pasta sauce the bake stays 'juicy', basics onions, basics bacon, basics pasta and basics mozarella make a cheap tea that feeds at least 6!
'Neither a lender nor a borrower be'
Now why didn't I take any notice of the
    second part of that quote!!???

I'd like to see a Guardian food writer (Guardian just because it's what I read) live and cook on basics for a week or two. Come on guys I'm throwing down the gauntlet. Let's see some REAL economy cooking.
