The only Basics thing I've had which I probably won't buy again is the Fruit & Fibre - there really isn't a lot of fruit in it (and they use sultanas rather than raisins which I don't like!), .

Arent sultanas just less dried raisins?

No, they come from different varieties of grape (I think) - sultanas are from a yellow variety, if I remember rightly.

I think it's the texture I don't like - sultanas are like big squishy, soggy raisins to me!!

To make this relevant, it was mentioned a few pages back about the big tins of beans & sausage being cheaper than a smaller tin of just beans... not any more! Tin of beans & sausages are now up to 30p - haven't tried these but noticed price when buying beans.

Pleased to see that tinned pineapple is now down to 13p though! And noticed a new 4 pack of basics pain au chocolat for 86p (I think) - will be trying those soon as a weekend breakfast treat, I think!
  • Have tried lots of different basics with varying likes/dislikes.

A big dislike was the Basic sainsburys dried pasta/penne.

Big likes- All the biccies, Museli, Apples, tinned toms.

A thumbs up for the new basics ready to bake french sticks, think they were around 40p a little bit smaller than the standard ones, but tasted fine.

Has anyone tried the tinned stewed steak? I dont usually buy that sort of thing but I'm wondering if it might make a nice pie or something?

Only once, smelt a bit dog food ish, wasn't appetising. Much better to make it yourself, then you will know what goes in it!

We've been using these for ages - some are slightly bigger than others sometimes so I usually have a good root around on the shelf and then stock up :)

I love the tinned pineapple - was 18p a few weeks ago, then 14p, now I see it's 13p - I have a tin as part of my lunch at work every day - counts as one of my 5 a day, is only about 100 cals a tin, and is lovely (I have to make sure it's been kept in the fridge all morning though, as I like pineapple best really cold :))

A thumbs up for the big tin of sausage and beans which I had half with a big jacket potatoe and cheese. Couldn't tell any difference between this and the other brands. Plus I am a bit funny about baked beans and found them to be perfectly acceptable

I found the sainsburys Museli a bit "bran" tasting and didn't like it. I get the asda value one for the same price and i think it more oatey and has a bit more fruit in it.
Well, I tried it for the first time this morning and was very pleased :D with it. Yes, it does live up to its Basics name but you can always add a few extra raisins or nice squidgy sultanas or chopped nuts. It is a megabargain at 58p a kilo, compared to the likes of Jordans at around £3.50/kg. I liked the toasted wheat flakes in it, nice n' crispy.
