can u give putty cats tins of tuna in brine? Mine goes bananas whenever she smells tuna, but i would worry about the salt levels in it, even with having drained it?

So, I tend to buy the tuna in spring water which i hope is better for cat and I ... but is kind of expensive ... for cat it's an occasional treat. maybe draining the cheaper brine tuna then giving it a bit of a rinse in water is the answer?

Mind you, for all i know, your bog standard tin of cat food could contain just as much salt ... and I could just be an over-anxious cat owner :D

I do the same as you - buy it in spring water for the cat. But us humans get the cheap oily one which is ickier to drain! Haha, our cats are privileged.

And on that note, has anyone tried the basics salmon? They had an advert saying it's just different cuts of the same fish, wonder if it's any good.
  • I buy the basic salmon bits for my dd to make Japanese sushi with. They seem fine.

I bought the basics salted peanuts the other day and they were lovely (I wanted plain but they don't do them so I just had to wash them lol). We ate the leftovers and they were great, not too salty, a bit smaller (as the bag said) but perfectly ok.
  • hi everyone

bought 7 of those basics loose apples today, for a grand total of 68p! i have tasted one and i'm not exactly sure of the variety but it is very nice - really crunchy and tangy - so thanks to those of you who said to give these a go.

noticed there is some new basics instant porridge, so bought a pack to give it a go - 99p for 500g. looks exactly like sainsburys own brand instant porridge 'hot oat'.

also, those of you who buy tuna may be interested to know that the amount of salt in half a can of JS tuna in spring water is only marginally less at 0.60g than the salt in half a can of basics tuna at 0.65g! JS own-brand tuna in brine has a higher level of salt, it was something like 0.80g for half a can.

so, for some time now i have been paying an unnecessary premium for JS tuna in spring water on the erroneous assumption that it had a lot less salt in it

Is that the ready brek-type stuff? Let us know what it's like as I sometimes get a craving for ready brek :D . (not a craving in that way  )

Although their normal porridge oats are only 99p for 1kg. I use these in a pan or if it's just for me I put them in the microwave with milk and some sugar and cook for about 1 min then add some jam or golden syrup, they taste exactly the same as the oat so simple sachets ;) .

Yes :D, will let you know what its like.

I eat the stuff most mornings ... sometimes have granola with basics yog poured on top - yum!!

I should really buy ordinary porridge cos its cheaper, but i tend to rush around a lot in the mornings, and every minute counts if i want to arrive at work on time so i tend to go for very quick and easy breakfasts:rotfl: :rotfl:
