Basics sales up 60% at Sainsburys..probably due to this thread...
Sales are up more than 60% for Sainsbury's "basics" range of 550 cheaper products as cash-strapped consumers look for bargains

  • I just did a weekly shop consisting of mainly basics items-one thing i would never normally buy from the basics range is tea as i like it strong and normally get pg tips. But, i bought the basics fairtrade ones for 28p for 80 bags...and they are really nice, and i will definitely get them again:beer:
  • Hello all,

Tried Basics Strawberry Jam and Teacakes yesterday, they were both yummy!! Would def recommend the jam if you have fussy boyfriends who don't like bits....

Like I said earlier, a billy bargain! Our first-ever Sainsbug order arrived last night, brilliant service, polite driver etc. We ordered TWELVE BOXES of the 28p tea bags owing to several of our friends asking us to get them a box (there are no Sainsurys stores near where we all live). They could only supply 9 but substituted 3 boxes of their own-brand Red? Tea Bags. Those 3 boxes came to more than all the 12 boxes of the basics tea came to!! Needless to say, they were sent back with the driver. :p

    More products to report on:

Tomato Pasta Sauce: A little watery in the jar - personally, I didn't make it to the instructions on the jar, I threw it in with some mince, onions and mushrooms, and simmered it for about an hour (only supposed to be heated up for about 3 minutes or so). It reminded me of a home made one I sometimes make, but with very cheap tomatoes. Still, not bad though.

Spaghetti: Just as good as any other pasta I've tasted.

Will go and test the biscuits soon - yum!:D

    I've been Money Tipped!
I bought the tea bags today to try, I found them pretty tasteless to be honest, no flavor to them.
  • I'm doing my shopping list and I fancy doing a roast on sunday.

I've spotted 'basics sage and onion stuffing' and i'm curious as to what its like - anyone tried this?

I'm not a stuffing 'connoisseur' so anything that's not too far a departure from paxo sage & onion standard will suffice :rotfl:

I'm with you on this one bootman. They taste like floor sweepings and what with drinking around 10 cups a day I need it to be right for me :D . I get the red label tea bags 480 for £5.99, and really stock up when they're on offer. At only 1p per bag they still a bargain.

  • Tried the basics baked beans on the basis of a few recommendations on this thread.

While the taste of the sauce and beans was good, i have to say that the sauce was not thick enough - i was eating the baked beans with some wheaten bread and instead of sitting on top of the wheaten bread like sainsburys own-brand or heinz, the sauce sank in its entirety into the wheaten bread, leaving the beans behind on top of the bread - it looked a bit strange :rotfl:

I didn't have any access to cornflour to thicken it up since this was my lunchbreak at work, but maybe a bit of that would do the trick.
