I have never noticed the Basics frozen cooking bacon, I have just seen packs in the chiller cabinets. However, I get my cooking bacon from Farmfoods - £1.50 for a large pack (says 908 gm on the pack but quite often weighs more!) Much better value than Sainsbury's Basic. You'll find it in the chiller cabinets, making it easier to split into smaller portions to freeze yourself.

Weight isn't everything. It might be cheaper but the Farmfoods version seemed to me when I saw it to have more fat and less actual meat than the Sainsburys one.

I had Sainsburys Basic Rose Table Wine last night. £2.74 for a bottle which I put with 49p Sainsburys Diet Lemonade to make Spritzer. Lovely! Really not that shabby when you're workplace is up the creek and you need a big glass of wine on your tiny wages!

However Sainsburys Basic Samosas are less inspiring. They are however low calorie/low fat and therefore a good choice for someone dieting.

Basics red is also good. Like the Rose, it's 11% alcohol which is more than enough to make you relaxed (without the hangover!)

Cream Cheese - Tastes fine to me, I normally use it for cheesecakes though and it's just as good as philly or own brand :)
The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.
  • another vote here for the basics custard, i have been known to eat the whole tin, oooops!:o
the rice pudding is also good, and so are basic crumpets

  • I like the shampoo. It washes just as well as the Head and Shoulders that I used to use, but there's less foam, so it's easier to rinse when I'm washing my hair over the wash basin.

I don't like their basics wholemeal bread and buy their ordinary wholemeal bread which is still cheaper than brand names.

I buy their basics apples and pears. You can't predict what sort of apples they'll be - presumably whatever they can get the best deal on - but they're just as good as more expensive apples and pears.

Basics apples are lovely Sometimes they are huge! Just as good as other more expensive brands. I think they are in the Basics section as their skin texture is not too perfect sometimes but don't let that put you off.
  • Basics apples are great and recently it's been UK ones as well which is brilliant. I do tend to check the size of the prebagged ones though cos i prefer small apples. In my nearest you can buy either prepacked Basics apples (usually smallish) or loose basics apples (normally huge).

I tried the basics pasta sauce for the first time today (35p for a jar that would serve 2 people) but I wasn't impressed. It lacked flavour and the "richness" of other pasta sauces, even after I'd added loads of veg to it.I normally just make my own sauce from tinned tomatoes, tomato puree etc and think I'll stick to doing that!

I must have been lucky then on the four occasions I bought it from FF. Very little fat to throw away and lots of nice lean bacon left. Perfect for chopping up for soups, omelettes, quiches, pizza etc. Still not tried the Sainsbury's basic to comment on that.
