The single garlic bread has leapt up from 40p to 47p while the twin has gone down from 84p to 78p, thats a 17.5% increase on one and a 7.1% decrease on the other, how do they set their prices?

Basics cheddar/cheddar style cheese is not usually a good buy, not for taste but price. Not every week but often the "on offer" standard cheeses will be cheaper or around the same price.

Hi, yeah actually, I did think it wasnt exactly cheap for my £1.79 chunk, as I usually buy the branded cheese when they on offer. But as it happens there wasnt an offer on the day I looked, so thought I may as well at least sample it!

Do love a nice mature cheddar :)
  • Basics Diet Tonic Water. As I've been put on a diet by my better half, a glass of tonic water with a slice of lemon is a good alternative to the usual (gallons of) beer I have in the evening. And very nice it is too - especially for 25p.

Tried the Basics mince & kidney beans today in a chilli. Both were lovely. Can't believe I've been spending nearly £3 on mince, when the 97p stuff is just as tasty.

    Other good items:

    Potatoes
    Carrots
    Tea bags
    Kitchen towel
    Cat litter
    Cling film
    Black sacks
    Toilet roll
    Tissues
    Sanitary towels

I agree with a lot of what you have said, however I found the cat litter a bit chewy and I tried to dry myself off with sanitary towels, as I assumed for the the description they would be cleaner than the regular sort, they weren't that absorbent so I had to revert to the my usual towels.

Haven't read through the thread but have to say that Sainsbury Basics honey is disgusting - a far cry from Morrisons basics brand honey, which is quite pleasant.

I like the Basics Houmous and the kids love it - it's got less of the tahini (sesame stuff) in which is apparently why it's cheaper. Only 75p I think for a big pot.
  • Just to let everyone know that my cheesecake turned out great. The basics cream cheese was great for it.

could i have the recipe for that please? i love cheesecake - but the cheap ones always scare me with their crazy chemical heavy ingredients!

i used to think the basics stuff was a bit dodgy, but i've become a big fan :)

    recommended stuff;

angel delight ( the basics version ) chocolate or strawberry - very nice for 9p! you have to mix it a bit more than normal to make sure theres no lumps. just a shame they don't do a butterscotch one!

    black pepper

beef, chicken and vegetable stock cubes - i find these fine for chili's, cottage pies, soups etc, but you do have to mash them about a bit to sure they dissolve properly

chocolate - milk, white and dark are all lovely!

    chopped tomatoes

flour - plain and self raising, does the job!

    garlic

gravy granules - fine, but like their stock cubes you have mix it up quite a bit to make sure it dissolves alright otherwise you'll end up with lumps

    honey

    kidney beans

    mayonnaise

mince - just be sure to drain the fat!

    muesli

    dried mixed fruit

    mixed herbs

    natural yogurt

    smoked bacon

    stuffing

tea bags - fine, but leave longer to brew - otherwise they're a little weak

tinned fruit - i like the oranges, pineapple and peaches ( although i haven't seen the peaches recently ) but i didn't really like the mixed fruit - the pears can sometimes be quite hard

    toilet tissue

    tomato sauce

    white rolls

    wholemeal bread

    bleach

    sponge scourers

    all purpose cleaner

    anyone tried the sausages?
  • No Problem!

    For the base:
    100g digestives (basics)
    50g Butter (unsalted basics)

Crush the biscuits, mix in the melted butter an squish into a springform tin (line it the bottom with baking paper so its easier to get out). stick in the fridge until you need it.

    Topping:
400g Chocolate (you can use what ever you fancy I think but I use basics milk)
284ml Double Cream (odd size I know buts its one top of elemet (sic) double cream)
    250g Creme Cheese (basic)
250g Mascapone (don't know if you could just replace that with creme cheese or not. Not tried it yet but i use sainsburies own!)

Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a pan of hot water (leave to cool slightly)

Mix the cream and the cheese in a bowl until well combined. Be careful not to over beat as it can get a bit stiff.

Add the chocolate and mix until smooth and put on top of the base.

Put back in the fridge for at least 3hrs or overnight.

To make mine look posher i like to crumble a flake over the top ;)

    Hope this makes sense :)

Tried the basics brown sauce. It is okay - just okay - probably the first basics items I haven't really enjoyed. I will finish the bottle but probably will not be buying it again. :)
