  • For the second time since Basics were launched, I have found something I won't buy again! The blue flush cistern blocks! The blue lasts for about 2 days of flushing and then it's gone. I know they are cheap but, come on Sainsbury's, 2 days? (The first "won't buy again" items, by the way, are the Basics choc ices!)

  • New basics experiment today. I'm making my "special occasions" cheesecake but am using basics chocolate (i know that ok and it half the price of the equivalent amount of dairy milk). Also have swopped the phillidelpia for the basics version. Fingers crossed it will work out ok.

  • Basics Toaster. After our Tesco Value toaster sadly passed away (it would have carried on for years but my wife dropped it causing the handle to break off) after five years of sterling service it was time to buy a new one. And the Basics range has come up trumps again - at under five pounds it does what it's meant to and it seems to be well put together. It's basic, but I can't really see the point of spending any more if all you want to do is toast bread. Recommended.
  • Tried the Basic crab sticks today (50p). Ok not great.

Just out of interest, how does Sainsburys Basics compare to Tesco and Morrisons equivalent "Value" range?

A few people I've talked to say they use T and M's value range and have not tried Basics.

I find Basics much much better quality than either of the other 2, I cant eat other value stuff - its garbage :)
  • Just to let everyone know that my cheesecake turned out great. The basics cream cheese was great for it.

Full flavour cheese - Tastes fine to me.

Basics cheddar/cheddar style cheese is not usually a good buy, not for taste but price. Not every week but often the "on offer" standard cheeses will be cheaper or around the same price.

Basics full flavour cheese and full flavour cheddar cheese both work out at £5.98/kg and the price does not seem to vary much.

The current on offer cheeses include
Lake District Cheese Co Mature Cheddar (mine keeps till Feb next year) and
Wyke Farm Just Delicious Extra Mature Cheddar both are 400g packs
At 2 for £4 they work out at £5/Kg a saving of almost £1/kg compared to basics full flavour and 12p cheaper than basics mild cheese.

Not tried it but Leerdammer and Leerdammer mature 225g is currently £1 = £4.44/kg

Quite a few other cheddars are on a 2 for £5 = £6.25, just a bit more than basics.
