Noticed today the basics tea bags are down to 27p for anyone who wants to stock up.

Naturally I bought another 3 boxes to make my tally up to 12 boxes!

Basics Hot Chocolate for 68p (I think!) and it is lovely. You don't need as much as it says on the pack either. My folks even take it on hols abroad with them they love it so much!

Also basics instant porridge oats are excellent. About 50p I think but they were not in my local the other day so can't be sure and I need some more!
    3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!

Could I just second the basics instant porridge - I buy it to sub some of the oats in flapjacks to make them chewier - but today I had them for breakie after a particularly cold dog walk at 6am.
More texture than the ready breks and the like, in fact more like porridge.
  • I agree like the instant hot chocolate, brie, even the tomato soup. Soup is a little thinner than heinz and not as sweet, the sweetness not being a bad thing.

  • Here's another vote for the brie - we love it in my house. Also the naan breads, and the tinned chopped tomatoes and kidney beans for cooking.
  • I did an online shop and found sainsburys now do basics cat food, tinned. have ordered some to see if the cats will eat it. cant remember the price

    GOOD......

    kitchen towels
    all basics veg/fruit
    sr/plain flour
    eggs
    cat litter
    peanut butter
    jam
    pitta breads
    naans
    rice
    pasta
    tinned beans
    tinned tomtoes
    kidney beans
    scourers
    washing detergent
fabric softner (though I prefer to buy bold as the basics one doesnt really leave a strong, just washed scent, iykwim.
    multi vitamins
baby wipes( use these for keeping in car, for messy hands, not really good enough for nappie changing imo.
    scotch eggs
    pork pies

    BAD

tuna!!!! was vile, cats ate it though, so good as a treat for them.
shampoo and conditioner, stripped my hair, however I used up the shampoo as a shower gel instead of throwing way , and used the conditioner as a shaving cream on my legs, worked well.

loo roll, ok but seemed to get through these quicker , so back to buying sains own brand.

ordered and going to try wednesday........

    snitary towels,
    cat food, tinned
tea bags..... were 27p so looking forward to trying these

tonic/soda water - mixes fine with vodka
frozen fruit - makes a great smoothie
    natural yoghurt - see above
full flavour chedder - check the individual prices but works fine in sandwiches
cartons of chopped tomatoes - light and easy to carry
    breakfast juice - tastes fine
red wine - light and easy to drink
kidney beans - good in chilli
    pasta -
lemonade - i only hav this as a mixer but its fine
soft cheese - mild but creamy
reduced fat spread - fine on toast
sliced ham - i hav this on toast for breakfast when im in a rush
potatoes - the last time i bought these they were desiree which is my potato of choice, just check the brands
    salad potatoes - lovely
jaffa cakes - these r ok
toilet cleaner - lovely pine smell and keeps my loo sparkly bright
washing up liquid - does the job for me
hair conditioner - this is fab!! my hair was left soft and shiny and nt flat at all!!!
rubber gloves - fine for washin up
handwash - gentle on my sensitive skin

  • What I buy/have in my cupboard. Note any tastes here are my opinion and may not be fact, etc. etc.

Ketchup and Brown Sauce - tastes the same as other brands, downside is they're in glass bottles rather than squeezy ones so sometimes hard to get out when you get to bottom of bottle, but it's much cheaper so you can just recycle the bottles (another advantage compared to Heinz bottles plastic type 5 which can only be recycled in a small few parts of the country)

Sausages - again, I cannot taste the difference, they cook well and do not fall apart when cut

Ham - in my sandwiches every day. Not as nice on its own and not as nice as the more expensive brands

Washingup liquid - does the job just fine

Beans - identical to other brands, downside is no ringpull but anyone can use a tin opener, just a bit messier

Teabags - again the same as others, even better is that they are Fairtrade

Eggs - I never used to buy basics eggs on ethical grounds, but now these are not from battery hens I do

Chicken fillets/drumsticks - no issues but I don't often buy these any more as the supermarket own brand is often cheaper when you do bulk buys (eg. current offer on fillets was 2 packs for £6- which works out cheaper than basics)

Soft cheese - nice on crackers or with smoked salmon (or both!)

Jam - spreads very nicely with a teaspoon (not knife)
