    Another one here thinks hot chocolate is worth avoiding.
  • Had basics frozen apple crumble and a tin of basics custard last night.
    The custard was fine, a bit too yellow but tasted ok. The crumble was also very nice, lovely and tangy apples with sweet but smooth crumble topping. I could make a nicer one myself but probably not for the same money.

  • A friend on FB informs me the Basics Custard is made by Ambrosia (sp?) They work there so they should know :D

    The Basic Tuna price is creeping up again to 69p - remember when it was what, about 35p?

    Been having the Basics fruit and fibre for my breakfast. It's brilliant - topped with my usual fresh fruit - cannot taste any difference. Big box for 69p - lasted two weeks. Will be getting some more today.

  • Ambrosia making the custard confirmation makes me happy. I love the basics custard and always insist to my friends that it tastes just like ambrosia, but they always turn their nose up at it. Vindicated! Can't wait to show them. ;)

    I have had to start buying some basic items just because the prices seem to be getting too high on the brand names.....I am still a bit funny about buying the meat products though like whole chicken and beef, dunno why just feel funny.....can anyone give me a verdict on the basics whole chicken and mince beef?

    The ones I have used and think are good value are

    Basics baby wipes 18p per back...ok not as good as pampers as they are a little thinner,a little smaller and not as much frangrance but when you think a pack of pampers is like £1 ...well considering you can get 5 basic packs(and each pack has about 12 more wipes then one pampers pack) then its definately worth the swap.

    Basics Fish Fingers, they use pollock fish 58% and actually all fish fingers now use pollock unless it actually says on the front Cod or Haddock....these are actually really good, my kids haven`t noticed the different and my wife who is usually funny about cheaper foods even likes them....they actually cook better than some of the better brands as some of them tend to split and a bit of liquid come out but these dont when oven baked......would definately recomend these.

    I also like the Mozzarella basics either balls or grated.....cant really tell any difference once cooked..

    I find all the veg in basics range is good also....I mean the mushrooms are bit more dirty with stalks on but I dont mind.....the veg and bananna is basics is fine, the grapes didnt look too nice so didnt bother with them.....but most decent grapes are like £4 a pack now which is mad.

    I was thinking if I did my whole shop in basics range I would save a fortune but at the moment there are still certain things I am not sure about especially when it comes to things like meat, eggs and cheese(which I find is a bit bland when cheaper)

    )

    For the much lower price , compared to other mince I think it is Ok. Perhaps a little more fat left in the pan after browning but I don't have expensive mince much to find out the difference.

    At 97p you can afford to try it with an open mind.

    The basics eggs are fine- good size and last well. They are also 'free range' which most other supermarkets don't offer on their lowest price/value range.

    Meat (ham, chicken slices) I tried twice, both times so fatty and slithery I just couldn't get through the first mouthful. Waste of my money so never re-bought! Chicken peices they sell but they are not 100% meat so have water added.
  • All the basic items are ok with us, but i think your cost is too high..
