  • I have had the basics chicken pieces. The fridges ones and the frozen ones. We used to buy the frozen's more as for what we were using them for they were better value (but rummage through the bags to get a good selection!).

I've tried the mince but found it too fatty and didn't like it even after draining. Not tried the sandwich meat other than the corned beef. The corned beef was ok as at the end of the day its a pretty low cost meat anyhow!

I like Sainsbob's basics frozen Garden peas, they are big and yummy, very sweet, it's a bargin, 1.81 kg for £1.52. Today bought theirfrozen mixed veg, hope they will be good as well, will try in the evening.

Sainsbury's basics tomato juice is very good - at just 34p 1L quite tasty, from now on I'm going to buy it instead of others.;)

The basics eggs are fine- good size and last well. They are also 'free range' which most other supermarkets don't offer on their lowest price/value range.

Meat (ham, chicken slices) I tried twice, both times so fatty and slithery I just couldn't get through the first mouthful. Waste of my money so never re-bought! Chicken peices they sell but they are not 100% meat so have water added.

I thought their basics eggs are Barn eggs so not free range?

I really like the Basics Cheese but I only buy mild for me and the kids so it's probably not for the cheese conniseurs (sp?) out there. They do a full flavour one which isn't too bad.

I confess I don't buy the basics meat. Actually the only meat I buy from Sainsbury's is bacon and a whole chicken. Everything else I get from Costco, butcher quality for Sainsbury's (if not cheaper sometimes) prices.

The curry sauce isn't too bad. Contains a few sultanas (blink and you might miss them ;)) but cheap and cheerful it's OK. I actually have only ever bought it with a view to using the glass jar :o

Bitsy you're right basics is barn therefore not free range

Well DS (20) the rice pudding expert has decided the basics rice pudding is not like ambrosia cos ambrosia is sweeter but reckons the consistency is spot on and well worth 17p so thats a result for us - told him if he mixed some jam/honey he'd be fine and he looked at me like I'd grown horns "why would anyone waste rice pudding by adding jam" was the retort :rotfl:

I was thinking if I did my whole shop in basics range I would save a fortune but at the moment there are still certain things I am not sure about especially when it comes to things like meat, eggs and cheese(which I find is a bit bland when cheaper)[/I]

I've found there's VERY often BOGOF on top brand cheeses and the 'normal' Sainsburys Extra Mature Chedder which brings the price down to BELOW the Basics Cheddar price. Whenever the offer is on (which seems to be every time I look/nearly run out strangely) I buy 2/4 blocks and I find I save a lot as you don't even need as much mature cheddar and it works out cheaper than the basic range.

Basics apple pie was fine - 90p but a little bland so we sprinkled cinnamon on ours which helped a LOT
Always use basics chopped toms, kidney beans etc
Basics garlic bread is fine - once we couldn't find it so bought the normal one and my girlfriend said she preferred the basics as the normal one had farrr too much butter
Basics Sainburys scones are delicious IMO
Basics Low fat yogurts are really nice (much, much better than tesco value ones) but only come in Peach and Strawberry
