Basics!!! What a life saver! Our food bill has been pretty big in the past, but lack of overtime at work has left us with a fiver or less to buy dinner and packed lunch stuff for school for two adults and three kids. The best thing is finding basics stuff reduced like diced chicken breast down to £1.50 from £2.39.

I haven't tried the curry sauce yet, I hate sultanas in curry. I love their Basics pasta salad with sweetcorn. The kids don't like the Basics orange juice drink that I put in their lunch box, and the Basics choc ices taste like snow! I really wish my local Sainsburys stocked the Basics dishwasher tablets instead of just the branded ones and their own brand in the large sizes. What would be even better would be a Netto, Aldi or Lidl nearby, but instead our other supermarket here is Waitrose:(

I have never noticed any sultanas in the curry sauce.

Reminds me of school dinners in the 1980's, yuck! The thing is I'm asian and I've never had a proper curry with sultanas in it so I don't know where that idea came from!

Go buy some basics fresh OJ from Sains...then get some from Morrisons.

You won't get it from Morrisons again.

The obvious reason the basics washing powder disappeared for a while..... the new box only contains 2kg!

Sainsbury's have pulled a fast one with their Basics Washing Powder. New boxes only contain 2.4kg instead of 3kg!

They box still says "30 washes" and the recommended amount to use has dropped from 100g to 80g. The ingredients have stayed the same except for the amount of phosphates.

Most people wouldn't notice the smaller box and if you are frugal with your powder anyway, it just means you get less washes for your money.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

    Hi,

After reading http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/cheap-supermarket-shopping#downshift I thought it might be useful to list the Sainsbury's Basics items that are/aren't worth trying. Apologies if this exists already, I had a good search before posting! Here are the items I've already tried:

    Good items:

    Monkey nuts (500g for £1.19)
Sweet peppers (500g for about £1)
    Carrots (2kg for 99p)
    Potatoes (5kg for £1.76)
Canned chopped tomatoes (21p per can)
Canned kidney beans (14p per can)
Oranges (68p for a kilo, really sweet and juicy)

    Bad items:

Bananas (they had a weird petrol-like smell, may have just been a bad batch)

Feel free to add to these. Kudos to anyone who dares test the basics curry sauce...

    John

Oooooh the sneaky wee sods ! I will be in on Mon morning, will see if anything strikes me and let you know. I'm not a great lot of use at this because I have the memory of a dead slug.
  • Since I found this thread I have changed my supermarket to Sainsbugs and buy mainly Basics. I prefer it to Value or Smart Price. Never tried the washing powder or the frozen meat, but tinned and fresh veg have my vote.
