I hated the basics digestives, bourbons and custard creams; all were too floury.
I use the spaghetti and the tinned tomatoes and would recommend them.0 -
The ready salted crisps multipacks from Basics are nicer and healthier than Walkers. I love them.0

We also get the peanut butter, which is fine (I hate any peanut butter but everyone else loves it). The lemon squash is also good, taste like dearer squash. My kids love the 99p pizzzas, we just add some bacon and pepperoni on them (all basic) and some herbs, cheap and cheerful = happy children.
My cupboard is awash with white/orange tins!! They all look the same! :rotfl: Shame the basic pineapple has been dropped from my local store
Edit:-
Just put "basic" into the Sainsburys-to-you search engine and there are 274 basic items!!!Mortgage: Was: £154,495 Oct 2039 Now: £82,869.54 May 2037Swagbucks ~ £130 (2024 ~ £395)Surveys ~ £136.04 (2024 ~ £280.14)Make £2025 in 2025 #5 ~ £964.62 ~ (2024 ~ £2,561.04)0 -
This is a really good thread! I have to admit I am a food snob, and a very fussy eater, so I don't tend to buy Basics/value ranges. But I'm trying to find a vegan friendly Christmas pudding, and Sainsbury's do a vegan pudding, but it's Basic. Having said that, comparing the ingredients of the Basic and the 'regular' one, it looks almost identical, so I'm guessing it'll probably taste just as good!
Anyway, Basics brands I've tried that either myself or my mum liked are:
Plum tomatoes
Tea (my mum's a serial tea drinker and doesn't mind this at all)
Tortilla chips (taste great with baked beans and cheese and taste okay when eaten on its own in moderation)
Lasagne sheets (same ingredients as regular one (last time I checked anyway))
Washing Powder (doesn't have a strong fragrance and washes the clothes well)
Bin Bags (a bit thin, but does the job)
Personally speaking, I wouldn't buy value ranges of dairy, meat or poultry, I'd wonder how they'd make those products cheap (plus I've tried basics mince meat and hated it!).

Here are a few more Basics things we recommend...
Tinned tuna - small bits but tastes lovely.
Popcorn (ready made) - the best I've tasted, not too sweet.
Salmon steaks - just as good as full price.
Toothpaste - excellent, tastes nice too.
:T0 -
Basics things I would buy again:
Lasagne sheets
Chopped Tomatoes
Tinned plum tomatoes
Rubber gloves
Tin Foil
Part baked baguettes (excellent for the price!)
Orange juice (but not quite as nice as the dearer ones)
Pitta Breads
Mozzarella Balls
Soft Cheese
Washing up sponges
Butter
And the stuff I wouldn't...
Chedder (not enough flavour for me)
Hair conditioner (it was really runny and didn't seem to do anything)
Clingfilm (very thin and hard to tear)
Turkey leg (just plain disgusting!)0 -

but then not every store is going to stock the whole basics range0 -
Maybe they came from a bad batch but the Basics rice crispies I bought were abysmal. They were really undercooked and turned into a tasteless mush as soon as the milk hit them. I threw them away -I couldn't even finish the first bowl.
I'm undecided on the jar of sweet pickle. You can really taste the ginger in it which Branston doesn't have. I'll go for a ginger-free one next time I think.
Winners are:
Toilet rolls - I realise they're smaller than normal ones but for price nothing else appears to come close.
Cashew Nuts - They have less salt on them than the standard ones which have too much in my opinion.0 -
I've just had another think about which Basics products I've got...
The thin bleach is a bargain at 27p I think.
The pack of 3 soap bars are fine. I prefer soap without much of an odour. They're better than one of their individual bars I bought (don't remember exactly which it was) which hardly dissolves at all. It'll last forever because you don't get much actual soap off it when you use it!0 -

Just wanted to say that we've been very impressed with basics rice cripsies. Have eaten pretty much all other brands of the things and no one can tell the difference!0
