Curry sauce was 19p a jar last week in my branch
Basic penne had gone from 19p to 43p though!
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

i cannot belive how much the basic range has gone up since the start of this thread, loo and kitchen roll is good, tin foil, tinned toms, tinned mushrooms, pasta, salad stuff and most veg, i tend not to buy basic fruit as apples are waxy and past there best. caramel wafers are a must in this house.. my advise would be just try it once if you don't like it you have not spent mega bucks..
Fruit is ok as is all the veg. Apparently all fruit and veg basics are from the same batch as the normal fruit and veg, they are just odd shapes. If they are past their best then they should not be on sale. I find the apples to be very juicy. I agree with your advise though and that is try the basic range just once to see for yourselves and if you don't like then you won't be losing megabucks.

Their fresh apple and orange juice in the plastic bottles is good.

The chocolate digestives are nice too.

I'm very pleased with their rice too.
  • Not one you'll buy more than once, but I just picked up the Basics sandwich toaster for £5.72. Been looking out for it for some time as I saw one in stock ages ago.

Seems to work pretty nicely on first attempt. Takes two sandwiches (cutting each in half). Very short power cord is the only obvious downside. Nothing disturbing in the instructions' warnings. Um, it has a fuse!

No timer or fancy features obviously, but I'm still as impressed as I am suspicious given that nothing else seems to be below £20-25 even with functionality this basic.
  • Their prices are getting a bit ridiculous now. The pasta sauce is now 36p! The pot noodles 28p. Beans 29p! Increases of over 200% in a year!

Their weetabix are 70p! Small and fall to pieces!

Like their range as they seemingly have a basic version of everything...inlculuding toasters and hoovers but some of their prices are getting a bit too high!

I bought their Basics hand blender for £5 two years ago, it still works fine, I did buy a blender 'cup' for it on Ebay though as it didnt come with one which sometimes proved hilariously messy! :p
  • Basics grated mild cheese is £1.98 for 500g (£3.96 per kilo), basics mild cheese about £5 per kilo when bought as a block - small, med or large. I was gonna grate it anyway so saves having tired arms :D.

    Choc
  • I like Sainsbury's basics, a lot of Tesco's basics stuff I have found not very nice through to just inedible but I have had a lot of luck with Sainsbury's.

Basics fruit (grapes, apples, bananas, and mangos especially) and veg (peppers, onions etc) are good.

Basics cream cheese is perfectly edible. Basics curry sauce and sweet and sour sauce are both pretty good, and if you didn't know they were basics you couldn't tell.

I actually prefer basics biscuits to any brand name, especially cookies! Yum.

Tins of chopped tomatoes are a little watery, but work just as well in recipes as any other, and their chopped pineapple chunks are the best I've tasted tinned pineapple to be.

I use the basics chicken which is fine, basics bread if their longlife bread is not about (I can't seem to get through bread, and don't have freezer space to justify freezing it!) and have been known to use basics pasta (though at the moment I'm using a named brand that was on offer because I fancied a change of shape!).

I always use basics squash now, for 15p you really can't grumble. :)

    The only bad things:

The basics pot noodle equivilant smelled so awful when I opened it I couldn't face eating it - straight in the bin!

My guineas won't eat the basic salad. I think they may just be snobs?
  • Basic Ketchup is very nice, price has now shot up from 20 odd pence to 46p!
