Sainsbury's Basics good/bad items

Their basic teabags should be avoided like the plague
Surprisingly their basic "weetabix" are not bad, so long as there's enough warm milk to make them nice and soggy with sugar or golden syrup
We get most economy things from them and have found them ok. Their choc mousses are fab. I have to agree with Ben84 re: stock cubes. They're like little salty bricks and don't dissolve properly.Mortgage: Was: £154,495 Oct 2039 Now: £82,869.54 May 2037Swagbucks ~ £130 (2024 ~ £395)Surveys ~ £139.39 (2024 ~ £280.14)Make £2025 in 2025 #5 ~ £964.62 ~ (2024 ~ £2,561.04)0 -
re basics butter its more expensive than say willow, basics butter is 84p and willow is 68p i believe,
To be fair, willow isn't butter, it's a type of margarine.
The sainburys basics butter is the cheapest non-offer priced butter I've found, and it's very good butter too. It has plenty of flavour and doesn't just seem to vanish when melted, as some do.
I've also been eating lots of their basics Camembert which is really nice.
The weetabix are ok, despite being kind of grey, both in colour and taste. Not a favourite, I may not buy them again.
The cornflakes however are horrid. Soft, very chewy, and a garish canary yellow colour with a strong popcorn taste. Tasted kind of stale from new and didn't improve with time. I eventually managed to finish the box by smothering them in large quantities of chocolate coating and making a giant chocolate crispy lump. It wasn't a terribly good giant chocolate crispy lump, thanks to the cornflakes tasting like stale squashed popcorn, but by permanently binding the offending cornflakes to lots of chocolate they ended up being eaten anyway.0 -

Yes I agree! Sainsbury's basic sweetcorn is rank. The Asda one is miles nicer, but generally speaking I find the Sainsbury basic range of better quality than Asdas.

l usually dont buy basic range, simply im not willing to compromise on teh quality of the food l eat n cook. however saying dat l did recently after reading this thread try the basics cinema style popcorn. suprise suprise it was quite nice, l really liked it and it was not too sweet like the butterkist one`s. no preservatives or additives so im happy....

There are certain foods which are just that though..food..ie lettuce, beans, pasta, etc that supermarkets make a lot of money from because people believe what they are told about the 'named brands'.
If you want to believe that named brands are better for you, keep spending your hard earned cash on them..if you have a little doubt, try the basic brands .Whats the worst that can happen!! You might hate them and you have wasted hardly any money trying them out..but..I will stick my neck and say that you will love most of them and save a fair bit of money..So go on give em a try...go on,go on,go on,go on,go on,go on,go on,go on
A little tip if you like Heinz beans...buy some basic ones and stick a knob of butter/marg in the pan when heating em up and see what they taste likeIf you dont ask you dont get!!0 -
I mostly like the sainsburys basics stuff, but tried some of their vegetable stock cubes today and they were awful. Unusually horrid in fact.
Weirdly, all of Sainsbury's Basis stock cubes are like you described. They're really awful and spongy with no real flavor. I buy Tesco Value stock cubes which are perfectly lovely! No idea why Sainsbury's are so terrible...top 2013 wins: iPad, £50 dental care, £50 sportswear, £50 Nectar GC, £300 B&Q GC; jewellery, Bumbo, 12xPringles, 2xDiesel EDT, £25 Morrisons, £50 Loch Fyne
would like to win a holiday, please!!

Trying some different basics items ATM, so far
salad cream, yuk, very artificial tasting
grapes, yum, really nice
tortilla chips, a bit plain, but nice and crunchy, if eating them on their own not so good, but if using then with a dip brilliant.
Fresh orange juice, very nice0 -

Another vote for the Sainsbury's stock cubes being vile - just the same as greasy fatty washing up water - nasty!Do not feed the trolls please.0 -
One of the best bargains, in my opinion, in the Basics range is the 120 gram pack of smoked salmon trimmings. Perfect for making posh scrambled egg, adding to pasta dishes or just with some salad and Basics prawns for a little seafood salad!"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0

Basics tinned tomatoes are great-a couple of weeks ago, though, I noticed they'd gone up from 19p to 29p!! I think they've gone back down to 24 again now though, not sure what that was all about.
The new basics salmon steaks are good too, they're not as cheap as when they first came out but they're still cheaper than the others.0
