  • All the basics fruit and veg is of the same quality as the standard fruit and veg. The only difference being that the sizes of the fruit or veg are too big or too small to meet E.U. guidelines on size to be class 1.

Simply put it's fruit and veg in all different shapes and sizes. Or as some may say fruit and veg as it used to be

Too true - but make sure you are checking the prices of the Basics against the 'normal' - sometimes the basics are more expensive on a weight for weight basis!

Basics butter is good. Basics potatoes are also fine.

re basics butter its more expensive than say willow, basics butter is 84p and willow is 68p i believe,
  • I also buy lots of basic items, why not save the pennies:

CURRY SAUCE AT 4P a jar it has to be worth a try, I added mushrooms and onions from the garden to mine and used chicken as the meat, it reminded me of a chinese take away curry but yes it was fine.
Pasta sauce very good bit pale so a dash of tom puree sorted that out
    Beans
Speghetti - the sauce was very nice
processed peas and sliced carrotts i am the only one in our house who eats them but it does remind me of my childhood.
    Jam - was good
    Marmalade - good
Lemon curd - lovely hubby really enjoyed this.
Bread - I can five loaves for the price of one
Teabags - Well no one at work spotted the difference

I shop online and spend £100 for my monthly shop and get it delivered on a Tuesday and get the delivery foc - theres another 3.50 saved.

  • Curry sauce has gone up from 4p to 8p - I know it's only 4p but it's an increase of 100% and baked beans have gone up from 20p to 29p, almost 50% increase. Noticed these today.

  • the basics teabags are fantastic!!! 28p for 80teabags and they are fairtrade too!
i love my cuppa and i like it strongish and ive found these great tasting and able to do two cups of tea easily to my satisfaction per bag.
  • Things I like from the Basics range:

Tortilla chips - lovely and a bargain if you've got friends like mine who come over and steal your snacks!
Mozzarella cheese balls - no different to brand
Milk chocolate bar - fine for making rice krispie cakes
    Cornflakes
Hairspray - same as branded that I have used before
    Jam
    Honey
Biscuits - custard creams and bourbons are lovely!
    Crumpets

Personally I think Sainsburys Basic range is a lot better quality than Tesco Value.

Tinned sponge puddings (though I may be mixing this up with an Asda basic one) was one of the most disgusting things I've tasted in a long while!

We like the tinned sponge puddings (chocolate with chocolate sauce and plain syrup sponge pudding). Original price was about 51p, I think. Then reduced to 49p. Recently saw them at 23p. Compare with Heinz chocolate sponge pudding at 81p.

I mostly like the sainsburys basics stuff, but tried some of their vegetable stock cubes today and they were awful. Unusually horrid in fact.

Revolting taste, far too much salt. I couldn't really identify anything else, but can describe it as bad. Possibly marmite based. Strange smell with a strong suggestion of tea, and a very nasty dirty colour. Not very water soluable either, they don't even fully dissolve after 20 minutes of being boiled and stired.

Strangely, despite the immense taste and orangey-brown foaming of the water the stock cubes were largely intact, if a bit gooey and mishapen after cooking. Bonus points for potency, these things don't lack taste or presence in your cooking. You could probably reuse the same lump several times and make quite a large volume of foamy, orangey-brown water, should you really want to.

Not a terribly costly mistake, but these things are notably bad enough to deserve an addition to the worst things I've ever tasted list.
