  • That's good vix, her being 40. I agree with you totally: everything is worth a try. I am the proactive 'go for it' / 'have a try' type and know my OH has loads to offer and plenty of life left. It's just convincing him and an employer of that. He's a slow burner type- his true worth emerges over time, he's not a 'wow' person, so in an interview, others can shine brighter than him fairly easily I think. I of course think he's the bees knees:) My lodger's OH is early 40's and have been job hunting for 7 months with no sucess and he's prepared to turn his hand to anything: from postie to IT. Another good bloke and a hard worker but no one wants him so far. Lost count of the applications he's done. It's been a real eye opener.Beanielou - 3.5lbs!!!! That is fantastic girlie. Well. done. you.Oooh I am missing my smilies, dunno what's gone wrong --no purple either. Trauma!

    Good interview techniques:
always look people in the eye when you talk to them,
Don't be afriad to offer up examples of what you have done...one thing I learnt through getting my doctorate is that you pick up an amazing amount of transferrable skills...you just have to think about things the other way round... (obviously don't big yourself upif you don't think you can do the job but if you think you've got the qualis go for it) e.g. if you've organised an event or group then that is a prime example of organisational skills, management of time and people, project management, negotiation...a whole wealth of things that can make you look a bit more zingy.

It is worth tailoring your CV for each job if you have the choice and include a good covering letter which can summarise why you'd be ideal for the job (without being long winded about it) you may just catch their attention.

Rehearshing possible questions is also a good one as it means you ahve a few examples in your mind which you can trot out.

You don't necessarily have to be loud to get an interviewers attention but it helps to be direct, open and smile (always the last thing I feel like doing when you get in there).

The best advice is just to be yourself but learn not to do yourself down. Its un-natural to big yourself up but if you don't big yourself up none else will (other than The mrs BB's of the world!)

Mr BB might find it worthwhile to phone up and ask them for some feedback as to why he didn't get the job and where he could improove? most people won't mind giving you some reasons and you can learn some valuable stuff (a very humbling and humiliating thing to have to do, but it can be so worth it). This also helps as it will keep you in the interviewrs memory a bit more if any other jobs come up.

Being an older applicant doesn't necessarily have to be a disadvantage...you just have to play up your experience a lot more.

dunno if any of that is usefull stuff....

I agree seren - I've done an interview techniques course (specifically aimed at NHS posts) and it says that to be fair, you cannot be asked questions outside of what is on the personnel specification and job description. The personnel spec is the how you get shortlisted for interview. The job description is what the interview questions are formed from. Each point on a job description can be used to form a question. When my OH was going for a tech's job in his work, I looked at the job description and with the exception of a few technical terms, ended up giving him the questions he was asked. He answered so well that his manager had thought that he'd been primed by an internal source...

edit : pity I can't get it to work so well for me.

edit pt.2 I had logged on to add, brighton belle has your OH tried getting temp jobs through an agency? Sometimes even if you're temping it makes it easier to get another job....I hope I'm not showing my ignorance about you're OH's position though. I hope he gets something soon.

I find it unbelieveable that so many people who are fit for work are sitting at home [STRIKE]earning[/STRIKE] (stupidhead) claiming benefits whilst our service industry is relying on immigrants to run their businesses - my home town is currently full of very hard working Polish people, over to make a serious amount of cash (their idea of serious) to buy properties at home and fund a better lifestyle for their families - fair play to them.(then again it maddens me that people who want to work can't get jobs - go figure!)
I always believed that the Welfare state and benefits system was for people who were unable to work due to ill health and other circumstances. I happily pay my taxes to support people in genuine need but I hate paying for people who are sponging off the rest of us tax payers, I know of at least one person who has never worked a day in their life, perfectly fit to work but doesnt' see why she should when she can get paid for staying home and doing nothing - making herself unemployable. (going to change the subject now as I feel myself starting off on a rant!)
Goal for 09: Get fit and foxy. target weight 11st. 5/80.
Get out of dead end job and work for career I always wanted.

but I know where it all came from so thats okay. Am confident I can go back on plan and lose that this week. Had a gorgeous meal last night, a real treat. Not very MSE though - we went on the bus so that I could have a drink(not much of a drinker but like a glass of wine with a meal sometimes - won't drink at all when driving though) but missed the last bus home and ended up having to get a taxi which isn't cheap. It was worth it though - had a lovely bottle of wine and a great meal including a very luscious dessert. If you live in Leeds (or there's one in Manchester too) I definitely recommend Sam's Chop House.

BB so sorry to hear about OH. I'm sure the right thing will come along for him, it is out there. And your encouragement is so important! Victory, thinking of you . . . xx

I've lost 2lb this week, so only another 1lb to go to get back to where I was before I went to the spa. 3 days to put it on and 3 weeks to lose it, but when I look back over the last two weeks I haven't been trying as hard as I might. In fact if it wasn't for all of you I probably would have given up, as that's my usual pattern after a gain like that. This is going to be a good week.

So huge thanks to all of you wonderful peeps.

As someone who interviews fairly often I can only agree with all the good ideas offered to interviewees. Don't be afraid to sell yourself and use lots of examples from your own experience. A good interviewer will be asking you to do that but sadly many interviewers don't have a clue how to ask the right questions and haven't ever been trained to do so. You can always answer the questions they haven't asked.
