Hello. Hope you don't mind my joining in. I've got to lose alot of weight (5ft 3 weigh 13st 7lbs). Lots of medical probs too that account for some weight gain but aren't helped by the weight either! Decided to really go for it so have started swimming lessons go to aquafit and walk/run 6 miles twice a week. Still however haven't lost much weight! I don't have a bad diet but I think portion size is my prob!

I've seen BMR mentioned - is that the same as BMI? How do I work it out?

    Thanks Tagz
Hi tAGZ and welcome. I don't no nuffin about the BMR stuff but others will be along soon. But well done on increasing your exercise: this will definitely be having a very positive affect on your over all health and fitness and will be improve your body shape. All this is really important. However I totally understand you need and want to loose some lbs too. Vix has already mentioned using a smaller plate - I have found this very helpful. I find it so easy to dish up the same portion size as my OH, especially if it is food I like (which is most of it:D ). Addressing portion size might be a good start. Increase veggies and decrease carbs and protein portion sizes. Put your knife and fork down between mouthfuls and chew slowly, savouring each mouthful and try and tell when you feel you have had enough. See how that goes. Perhaps keep a food diray for a few days and see if you are eating more than you think? If you feel brave you could post it here for feedback :don't worry - we don't believe in starving to lose weight, it just might help us help you more to get an idea of what you eat : we many help you tweak your diet, rather than suggest radical changes.

What a friendly bunch - thanks for making me feel welcome!

I'm doing the Race For Life in June with two friends, and they are both fit and slim - they run for the full 6 miles - I lag behind and do a mixture of running and walking. But I am getting better! Yesterday I ran for 3/4 of a mile non-stop. I used to be tiny but then after illnesses and 4 kids, I'm at my heaviest weight.

I tried Weightwatchers last year but found I was paying £5 just to be weighed, no talks, advice or anything. And with no incentive I put all the weight I did lose back on again! Hopefully by joining this board I'll get the push I need to keep on the straight and narrow and have some fun on the way!
    I would if I could but I can't so I won't!
  • tagz, my best advice would be to log on here as often as you can, preferably every day: we mutually offer each other great support. Some belong to slimming clubs, others are following sw/ww priciples on their own (but with us , so not alone)or calorie count or 'just' healthy eating. It sounds like you have started on your journey and you will suceed this time. As beanie said, a number of us here have health/medication issues so what ever you are up against, someone will understand and everyone will be supportive. Well done of the running! From previous advice on here, the mixture of walking/running seems a good approach, gradually increasing the running lengths: but take it at a steady pace so you don't over do it too soon and it stays a 'pleasure.
    See you tomorrow then :D

  • k i am going on sketchy memory of home economics a-level 12 years ago here so i might be wrong in which case i am sure the more knowledgeable among us will correct me but

bmr or basal metabolic rate is the ammount of calories you will burn in a day of doing absolutely nothing ie lying in bed all day. the calories that your body needs to breath, digest etc etc.

bmi is your body mass index and is a really poor indicator of how overweight you are as it is based solely on height and weight without allowances for muscle mass or anything.

    tagz morning and welcome:D

Off to fight with boots about my prescription (they keep getting lost along the way from the docs:rolleyes: ) on the 25th April have appointment with consultant and the first time ever for me I personally have to decide whether to stay on the super strong arthritic tablets or come off them:rolleyes: I don't know the answer because I have not really noticed much of a difference but then again would it have got worse if I have not taken them? Uhm decisions.

Another huge one is the mortgage decision, I know it is the right thing to do but in my ear the news is on with repossesions, recessions and lots of words beginning with r:rotfl: I so want to rent and not be in the mortgage but renting is wasting money and OH says no, it is just me being petrified:rotfl:

Another decision is my Spain hol, 5 weeks paid half deposit for the flat all the flight money have all the clothes as well as a bikini this year rather than waht I wore last year:D easyjet will not refund flights, I reckon I could get the half deposit back for the flat but realistically house purchase needs every penny, so should I gather from somewhere the other half and go or loose it all and not go?

Oh well at least off ebay it looks like I can buy a local freezer to tide me over until Comet give me a full refund on the one that they could not fix.
