Casper, I personally think that if you are burning 250 cals then 1300 will be too low for you. Remember, it's not just about weight loss but staying healthy along the way. Why not try on a higher amount and see how it goes first? Slower weightloss is better in the long run, as I'm sure you know.

  • Thanx bails, was also thinking like that because I am a nurse and have a very active job too. What you say makes alot of sense to me rather make it higher to start with and cut down if it's to much, then at least I don't get fed up if I get hungry all the time due to being to strict.

    Cheers

:j Well done kymrob :j see, there was no need to worry :D ...

...Hi cfg (I believe it's 'Welcome Back' isn't it?) I'm another calorie counter, I started off on about 1500 cals per day, then gradually reduced it as the weight loss slowed down. The beauty of calorie counting is that you can include whatever food/drink you like, I found that it worked great for me and I'm sure it will for you :j ...

...G3ORG3 I think that at you age you shouldn't be thinking too much about calories etc but for your info here is a link about BMI for Children and Teens. I would still advise you just to cut out the unhealthy foods. Do take care!...

...I couldn't run at all when I carried my excess weight, if I had to run across a road it was like having steel bands around my knees and with various parts of my body flapping about in all directions :o . I love to run now and wish that I could do more of it...

    xxxx
I wish that I could be the oldest AND wisest....sadly it's not the latter :p but my time will come _party_ wooooh hoooh! Beware!!!!!!!

Casper, Can I suggest a good place to start would be to find your Basal metabolic rate (BMR) this tells you the amount of calories your body needs just to maintain itself at the current weight even if you stayed in bed all day!

When I first started my diet I had a BMR of 1885 so was given a calorie intake of 1800 calories which combined with my increased exercise meant that I was burning off the fat I had stored. My current BMR is 1792 so am now on 1700 calories (ie 92 calories short of my BMR not including the extra exercise) and will be decreasing them again when my BMR decreases.
Here's a link to a bmr calculator, hope what I've said is of some help.

Casper, thanks for sharing your story, congratulations on packing in the smoking and taking control of your health. My feeling is starting from BMI 29 you will do very well on 1500/day with exercise. If you cut to 1300 then that's only a "theoretical" 1050 after your exercise and that will be significantly lower than your BMR. You don't want your body to panic and start clinging onto the calories.

When the weight starts to comes off, as I'm sure you know, you'll need to reduce the calorie intake anyway! Look after yourself because especially with you being a nurse we NEED you to be healthy! :D

Good advice from Julesgr about the BMR, I update mine on my spreadsheet every week and get a new set of numbers for what I would supposedly need to do to maintain or lose 1lb, 1.5lb, 2lb a week depending on if I'm lightly or moderatively active (I'm never inactive). My current week looks like this for anyone that's interested:
    08 st : 03 lbs = BMR 1254
Daily calorie needs lightly active - maintain 1724
Daily calorie needs moderately active - maintain 1944

    Calories/day to lose 1lb/week - lightly active 1224
    Calories/day to lose 1.5lb/week - lightly active 974
    Calories/day to lose 2lb/week - lightly active 724

    Calories/day to lose 1lb/week - moderately active 1444
    Calories/day to lose 1.5lb/week - moderately active 1194
    Calories/day to lose 2lb/week - moderately active 944
If the numbers go red that means it's under 1200 which is the minimum recommended calorie intake for women - so I don't attempt to go there. As you can see the most I can sensibly expect to lose in a week is 1lb (might explain why I get cross when people diss their 1lb losses on here :p)

I am on a 1400/day pace this week and so purely mathmatically speaking I should lose about 0.5lb this week. Weigh in is tomorrow so we'll see ;)

OK I can see some eyes starting to glaze over. I'll shut up now.
