Hi guys
Sorry to jump in guys, just have a question to ask, I have decided to lose weight again after my surgery and have already today, joined the gym, I love it there, used to go there 2 years ago. Now my question is: I HATE DIETING!! sorry this thing posted before I was finished lol. So I've decided that calorie counting will be the way forward for me, far less complicated and I can get my head around it easily, have books and internet to work out calorie counts for stuff.
Firstly I worked out that I needed 1 550 calories a day to lose 1kg a week. And I need to lose 23 kgs. BMI is 29, scary! So if I exercise for 30 minutes a day (250 calories) worked it out, lol, does that mean I have to add 250 calories a day or do I still only have 1 550 a day? Sorry am really confused.
Thanx
Casper

Hi Casper
I don't really know about adding the extra 250 cals to your daily total, if you didn't you would lose weight faster than if you did.
I averaged about 1500 cals per week when I was 'dieting', although it was more a 'healthy diet' than a 'torture diet'. I lost about 1lb to 2lb per week without doing any additional exercise.
Missyg will probably give you a better answer - she seems to be a bit of a guru when it comes to this kind of mathematical problem.
Good luck with it (and well done on the smoking - spotted it in your sig)

Hi Casper, welcome!
Is the 1,550 based on being inactive, lightly active or moderately active to begin with? If you've already factored in your exercise then that's your magic number and you don't need to alter anything.
Otherwise, you can either add the 250 to your allowance and then exercise to balance it out - or you can stick at the 1,550 and have the exercise as a bonus to hopefully lose more as FFM has said.
250 cals in a 30 min session is quite a lot so that must be a fairly intense exercise you are doing.
Everyone is different - why don't you start at 1,550 plus your exercise and if you find you're too hungry, add up to 250 cals to that? Or if you're losing a lot of weight then you can also up the calories.
Logging your results week by week will give you a really good idea of how to proceed, although it's never quite an exact science! My diet pace is 1,200 per day and my maintain pace is about 1,500 (still fine tuning that though!)
Good to have another calorie counter here by the way0 -

I think I misled you a bit here, I've just been looking at my records. I only started keeping detailed numbers when I hit 10 stone. At that point I was averaging about 1200 cals per day and was losing about 2lb per week.
Once I hit target I began averaging about 1500 cals per day but kept losing at about 1lb per week.
I am now about 1750 cals per day 'on average' and 'on average' staying the same. I stress the 'on average' because I have been a bit up and down due to getting attacks of the munchies which I need to learn to control - I controlled it whilst losing and just need to get my head straight to maintain.
Bear in mind that I did not do any exercise whilst losing, except for going for a lunchtime walk at work. I did a couple of stepper sessions at Christmas with my new stepper but that quickly dwindled as I was at target and did not want to lose any more - plus I got a bad arm and could not wave it around to balance:rotfl: . I could do it now, but can't get enthusiastic about it. I keep up my lunchtime walk but that is about it.

Hi FFM and missyg
Thanx so much for your replies and for making me feel so welcome, thanx FFM noticing about the smoking, it is the end for me, I had surgery twice last week and stopped breathing twice after surgery, and I'm only 40. That scared the life out of me for good lol. I struggled to breathe properly for 3 days after that.
My journey started 2 yrs ago. I never had a weight problem but I smoked about 30 a day & exercised 2 hrs a day, 7 days a week, I was a maniac. Then over the years I gave up smoking, ate more so started again, gave up, ate, started, etc for about 5 years and in the process picked up 15kgs.
2 yrs ago I hurt my back badly at work & that put a stop to the exercising, I have a damaged disc but have been told that strengthening my core muscles, and losing weight will make it more stable and protect it from further injury. After 6 mnths I was back in training with a personal trainer who helped me no end, I was finally ready to start running again to lose the weight & then I hurt my back again, putting me out of action for another year, that won't be happening again, I'm alot wiser now about caring for my back, and have managed to find another personal trainer today. My job is less intense now than it used to be so am hoping for the best.
Then I found out by accident last October that I would need surgery so once again everything was put on hold, they found a 10cm growth in my body which has now been sucessfully removed and seems to be benign. So now I finally feel that this marathon is over and I can finally start getting my life back on track again, lose the weight, get fit again.
Anyway, didn't mean to make this a essay lol, just wanted to say thanx for making me feel welcome, I've decided to stick to 1500 calories & see where it takes me, if I'm not losing 2lbs a week, I'll make it less, if I'm not feeling well I'll make it slightly more. Thanx for the idea for a log, will definately be doing that. My sister, who lives in South Africa is doing this with me so we're also motivating each other, she's in the army and alot fitter than me, although that wasn't always the case, we used to be the same lol.
Thanx for everything, will be following this thread and soaking it all up, bit by bit.
Cheers
Casper
