Who goes out to buy a retail version of a new OS?
Exactly - no one0 -
suprisingly another pointless post on mse.
I'm not sure if you're talking about the original post or one below it, but I don't see why intelligent discussion can't happen on MSE?
People don't just have to have techie questions; why can't this be somewhere technology is discussed? People have talked about M$ vs Linux and how to get the best out of vista in this thread so no harm done. I know there are a multiple forums one could go on to discuss such things but this is a gooder place as anywhere.0 -

...and a BTEC HNC Electronics Engineering which I've had for 20 years.Plan:
To be mortgage free by the time I'm 45. As of 1/1/2008, 8 1/2 years and £35,000 to go.
To complete an HNC by the age of 16 1/2 is very good.0 -
That's impressive Conor. Twenty years ago you were 16 1/2 years old - if we are to believe you signature...
When I did an HNC in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, (many years before you) it was a 4 year course (2yrs ONC + 2 yrs HNC).
To complete an HNC by the age of 16 1/2 is very good.
He probably slipped that in to look clever, not looking so sharp now he's been found out :beer:0 -
Quite weird you think it's defamatory to be known as liking Apple or Linux......

Perhaps you should do a little research before posting in the future.
What a curious and rude reply - taking the thread further into patronising rubbish.
It's a pity there are one or two people here who can't have a sensible discussion without being patronising or rude at any given opportunity.
Firstly "d123", I suggest you do a "little research before posting" in the future, my name is isofa, not isofar.
The phrase Apple fanboy (or now updated to be fanboi for the PC amongst you) did become populist in the 1980s and early 1990s when Apple obsessives gained ground.
Obviously as you know the subject well you'll know Apple has been around for many years, pre 1984 mainly in the "hobby" industry, 'phone "phreaking boxes", the initial Apple/Apple II home computers, hitting it big with the Mac in 1984.
In the same way that Linux was originally a "hobby OS" and Apple set-up their company up for hobbyists, doesn't preclude that either today are not considered or used in a professional capacity. Both certainly are.
The term Apple fanboy is rarely used in anything less than a derogatory way towards Apple users, feel free to read up on the subject, I can pass on some citations.
I am extremely well versed on the subject thank-you, not that I'm going to list my qualifications to you. I'm secure in my knowledge, qualifications, and research, which doesn't all arrive from "Google". (Thanks though for your once again patronising way of telling us all how to open Google in a browser). I suggest rather than just Googling and taking everything at face value you find on the Internet, you turn into a true researcher and read printed literature with referenced reading lists to expand your mind.
There is no excuse for rudeness nor aggression, as superscaper pointed out earlier.
As for Linus Torvalds, thank you also for your lucid information. Unfortunately you are a little too late, I have had the pleasure of meeting him several times at presentations a few years ago and for balance for the MS haters here, I was with Bill Gates 3 weeks ago at a partner discussion in London, during his "step-down" period. So for the 3 main OSes I use I've met two of their creators, never had the pleasure of hearing Steve Jobs' keynotes so far...
Let's just hope with your outstanding knowledge on the subject, you don't pronounce Linux incorrectly as "Line-ux" rather than "lin-ux" - shall I patronisingly add this is because of how Torvalds' forename is pronounced?!0 -
this why i love this forum!!
Computer geeks will never give an inch, not one inch! They will insist they are right to the ends of the earth!
It only provides entertainment for the rest of us and makes the squabblers look very petty and silly.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Arguments between experienced members sometimes help clarify things for us newbies.
Is this the way things are going to go.

Interesting point - if Linux takes off in the portable/laptop PC market then it really will push down prices.
What does Windows/OSX have that a free Linux distro doesn't? Especially when it comes pre-installed and packaged for you on a laptop.Faith is believing what you know ain't so...0 -
