The variety of Linux is one of it's great strengths.
Having different 'flavours' of linux for different purposes. There are versions that aim to be as effective as possible for those in Music Production, one for Multimedia productions, one for medical professionals, one for scientific researchers, one for System Admins, one for Writers/Journalists, the list goes on...

Your right - but it is also one of its biggest downfalls in the view of joe public who doesn't know much about computers.0 -

But probably still as rare in all those instances as it is for home users. I've yet to be in an environment where they've actually used linux. They've not necessarily used windows but I can't think of a single example of linux being used (except a single instance of a x ray diffractometer comes to mind)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Am I right in thinking that some servers use Linux? If so, is it because it's more secure? That is to say less likely to be hacked? If I'm way off, sorry.

The GUI on Mac and Linux have always been far way and beyond Windows. They are simple to use and very pleasing to the eye. Its also a well known fact that the multimedia on Mac are well advanced, and Linux is renowned for its networking and security.
Windows is fine if you want to play games all day long, but then you may aswell buy a games console.......To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -
Lots of servers run Linux. Not so much a security issue, it can just be more suited to the applications being run than Windows. But then I'm biased I've always worked on Unix and Linux servers and only done anything on Windows ones in recent years. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

Errrmm I'm talking about actual computers I've used and seen. If I'd actually visited the Googleplex and used their servers your point would be valid. I don't quite remember linux being installed on my machine every time I use google! Besides I thought this thread was about standalone pcs, not servers. What a server does or does not run doesn't really have the slightest bearing on home use."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
