Personal preference?
Most people prefer Windows - that is a fact.
Most people have never used anything other than windows. That is a fact. People are force fed Windows at work, school or where ever.
It is foolish to say most people prefer Windows - they don't know any different.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Impossible to say either way without figures whether there's a majority or not but I'm sure there are many that prefer windows."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Maybe people are 'force fed it' because Windows is a better product.
Everything the same no matter which PC you use. No messing around with different distros and ways of doing things?
I'm certainly not a linux hater (or a Microsoft fan), but can people see that? If there was ONE linux distro maybe it would achieve a larger market share.0 -

I think it'd be a hard argument to say Windows is a better product. Interface, security, speed - there are many aspects which are beaten by the competition. However it's down to personal choice, what one likes, another dislikes. And each to their own.
Windows is so popular today due to brilliant business decisions made by Gates during the early life of DOS, long before Windows, and bad decisions Apple and other lesser companies made.
But it's a choice, informed people make a choice of what to use, office and other users just buy a Windows machine, because they either don't know the options available, or can't use other systems.0 -

But all of them are basically the same, with slightly different features (apart from basic which is very basic).
You don't need to know different things to do the same thing depending on which version you are using.
I've tried Linux in various flavours in the past, but none of them have ever been quite as simple as Windows to use on a day to day basis (and most of the games I play don't run, or don't run well under *nix).
Windows for all it's faults got to be where it is now for a fairly simple reason, it's tended to be easier to setup, and use than *nix for the home and office enviroments (I start with windows 3.1, and have tried Linux in various incarnations repeatedly since then, and windows was still easier to use/setup last time I tried it about 2 years ago).0 -

You know that is a ridicilous post as they all operate (and install) in exactly the same manner to the typical end user.
Windows is by no means perfect - like it or not, neither is Linux.0 -
I have to agree that windows is is the choice of most users, if only because that's what we use on a day to day basis at work. My kids are learning their skills on XP based machines, though even now they prefer firefox against IE and prefer winamp or VLC to WMP (they are 9 and 8 yrs old so are at least displaying some personal preferences).
I also agree that if Linux had a few less incarnations it may be taken up a bit more, but because it has more variations and is open source it is always evolving and, as a result, it can be taylored to suit the user. This, of course, is dependent on that person being able to delve around in the workings of the system. Herein lies the problem; it is beyond the reach of the average end user (I include myself). Setting up hardware can be a minefield, by no means impossible but involves more work than most people can be bothered with, certainly when there is an out of the box solution in windows.
I have never had a Mac, but have used a macbook now and then and have to say it was very good, especially in the multi media department. The design of course is excellent, but if you saw what I wear you'd know that's not really a consideration for me.
As always, it comes down to personal preference; vive la difference, it's what makes this life worth living.
