Ye gods!! I'm flabbergasted. Amazed. Well, not really amazed because I suppose you could see this, or something like it coming from a mile off. I'm just wondering how many of the sandwiches(?) at the reception that you paid for!

Super glue him to his office chair and guide him as gently, or not, as you like, around this site. Darn - you can't! Not unless you can sweet talk some friendly Board Guide into deleting this entire thread first!

    Hmm!

ps.gif Anything made with chocolate will do as a bribe. Or a can of beer. I happen to know that the Board guide here is easy

Yaarrrgghh!!!! It's a MAJOR Bug bear!!!

First WHAT is the point of inviting so many people to your wedding if you're not even going to speak to them

Second GGRRRRRRRR!!!!asking for money is the absolute HEIGHT of rudeness

I got married 4 weeks ago, we invited 16 people because they were family and we love them and we wanted them to share our day. I didn't want to spend my special day surrounded by aquaintences and being obligated to speak to distant family and long-lost friends.

We told everyone that we didn't want/need any gifts but in the end everyone CHOSE to give us something. We got a lovely pair of wine glasses, someone adopted us some owls from the World Owl Trust, we got some next vouchers, some cash and his parents paid for our honeymoon (!!!). The main point is that they WANTED to give us something....and THAT means the world to me :)

edited to say : Jet, your boss sounds like a ****!!!!!
Just run, run and keep on running!

My boss is getting married next Saturday and has asked all his invitees to give money rather than buying gifts. So, no chance of me making an OS wedding gift then, which I was looking forward to doing!

Now money is really tight for me and I need to buy an outfit for myself for the wedding (the last wedding I went to was about 10 years ago!), I'll be buying my outfit from Asda, Tesco, Primark or other such cheap outlet. So as well as this I'll be spending £15 on petrol and buying drinks (soft) as I'm driving, it's not going to be a cheap day. :(

Obviously there will be entertainment at the wedding and free food and I'm sure I will have a lovely time. I will be attending with my 7 year old son and possibly my partner although it depends on his work commitments.

So my question is how much money would you give?

WHY DONT YOU JUST DO A WORK COLLECTION AND CARD FROM EVERYONE MAYBE SET A MIN OF SAY £5 (DEPENDS HOW MANY YOU WORK WITH)THEN EVERYONE CAN GIVE (EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT GOING ) AND NO ONE KNOWS HOW MUCH PEOPLE HAVE PUT IN

Its not rude to ask for money is it? People ask for presents. Worse is the designer pale cream bean cube that the couple to be are probably never going to sit on, and which would be ruined by their offspring should they have any in the future. And how often do people use the fondue sets/doughnut makers/trouser presses...
Give anyone a copy of Martin's book, that will set them in good stead for married life!

    hi squeaky,

Thanks for the offer, but some people are just beyond help.

He even told me this morning how he had been listening to "that financial bloke they have on radio 2 on a Friday" (Martin) and how we should all save 3 months worth of salary. This is the man who has debts up to his eyes, is selling his house to pay off his debts, is the most wasteful person I have ever met telling ME how to deal with money!!!
 He's the one who can't afford a pint of milk - even though he earns 3 times more than me and has fewer outgoings!

If it wasn't for my other boss, we would have gone skint a long time ago.

You think he thinks that Martin's advice is just for other people, yes...?

There's none so blind... as the saying goes.

Anyway, it's just as well you said no thanks as I would probably have been hung drawn and quartered if I'd deleted such a fascinating thread :)

If he is this bad - then how safe is the business?

Maybe you should think of looking for a better job?

I just came across this thread as I am going to marry next year and had the intention of asking for money. I am from Germany and it is not at all a problem to ask for money where I come from...But when I read your replies I was rather shocked ... You basically said that it was selfish to ask for money but your arguments against it were even more selfish..I appreciate that no one wants to think he has to pay for going to the reception but at the end of the day you pay money for a present don't you? And has anyone mentioned here how much money the couple spends to be able to offer a lovely evening doo for their (apparently) unthankful friends??? And what's the point in wasting money on gifts that will never be used? Everything I could mention on a list I already have (unless you want to buy me a sofa...because that's what I actually need and not 5 sets of wine glasses)....
