  • Holy thread resurection batman!

I had to resurrect the thread Robin because EH killed it... :rotfl:

I thought I'd add my 2 penneths worth to this thread...

A cautionary note to anyone considering ordering a Motability vehicle through Evans Halshaw: They charge a non-refundable £100 ordering fee for every vehicle. No other dealer does this, so go anywhere else for a better deal, I did... :D

    Hi Everyone,

Was anybody here dealing with Evans Halshaw on Hadfield Rd Cardiff?

    Thanks

Yes and there a pain! No one is getting back to me and they have passed me around to 7 different people including to other dealers in there group nothing to do with where I brought the car!
  • 03/04/10 - booked my 07 Astra in to EH Plymouth for a Masterfit Major service to Vauxhall schedule - mileage 73659, total cost £159.95, including 4 spark plugs.
28/04/10 - took the vehicle to Kenward Motors Bromsgrove to diagnose poor running, which began 27/04/10. Verdict: "Spark plugs in very poor worn condition and could have affected coil wear" - plugs and coil replaced, cost £209.51. Mileage 75342. Apparently a new set of plugs had worn to such an extent after 1683 miles and 24 days that they could have caused the coil to fail. I don't think so. I will be tackling EH Plymouth tomorrow, and will report back on progress.

The other week I looked around our local Evans Halshaw (currrent car 15 years old lol) Came back and googled them, there was at least a dozen complaints on the local one so decided to give them a miss :)
  • Here is a copy of the letter I have just put in the post to Evans Halshaw -
    To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing with reference to a Volvo V40, which we bought from Evans Halshaw Motorhouse, Clifton Moor, York on 24 February 2010.

On the 25 March 2010, while driving, the car started to pull forward and the engine management light came on. When at a standstill the car was also revving, despite no pressure being put on the accelerator. We managed to get it home and the following morning, 26 March, my partner took it back to the dealership explaining the situation. The service we received from the staff and manager at the dealership from this point on was disgusting.

They weren’t really too bothered about the situation, and said that they would look into it. It was explained that we needed the car for the weekend as we were driving down to London to get a flight to Spain on Sunday 28 March and if it wasn’t ready, would it be possible to have a courtesy car as really, us having to take the car back in after owning it for 4 weeks was ridiculous and it was leaving us in the lurch. We were told that there were no courtesy cars and they couldn’t use one from any of the other Evans Halshaw dealers in the area. So we asked again that they try to get it fixed, as we really needed a car due to me being pregnant and unable to carry heavy suitcases. Using public transport was going to be extremely inconvenient and cause my partner to have to carry both our suitcases.

We called again on the Saturday (27 March 2010) to find out the progress of the repairs to be told that the service department would not be back in until the Monday morning and there was nothing they could do about this. We then decided to go up to the dealership in the hope that they might now have a courtesy car available. We were now told that as it was a Saturday they wouldn’t be able to insure us on a car and then backtracked to say there were also none available. We asked if they would compensate us for our train tickets that we were now going to have to purchase to get us to London and back but we were told that wasn’t company policy. I have now done some research and contacted Consumer Direct and also spoken to a Dispute Resolution lawyer and I have been informed that although you do not have to provide a courtesy car, however, I can claim for “consequential loss” for out of pocket expenses that had to be made whilst the car was being repaired. I have attached documentation of the train ticket costs and also the money we lost on the car park booking that we had at the airport.

From the 29 March 2010 – 6 April 2010 we were on holiday, but despite reassurance to the contrary we did not receive any calls from Evans Halshaw to inform us of the progress of the car. Hardly representative of the proud heritage selling quality new and used vehicles and great service that you speak of on your website.

My partner went back to the dealership on 6 April 2010 to be told that they had fixed the problem but it might take a little while to go back to normal. The revving was still happening at this point and the car still pulled forward, almost bunny hopping, when driving. It was not as bad as before, but still a problem. We trusted what the mechanic had said though and thought that this would disappear as he had stated.

On 27 April 2010, the car actually broke down while my partner was driving home. He had to call a tow truck which took him and the car to a garage. On April 28, the garage informed him that the entire throttle body needed replaced and this was the cause of the problem that the car had been having. This repair cost us £582.51 and was the only thing that could be done to make the car roadworthy, in fact, the car would not move unless this was done.

I am now writing to you as I feel the goods and the service that we have received from Evans Halshaw is appalling. I have spoken with Consumer Direct and my solicitor as we do not feel that you have fulfilled your contractual obligations as governed by the Sale of Goods Act 1979 which states that all goods supplied in the course of business must be of a satisfactory quality, fit for their intended purpose and as described. I am aware that under this law, we only had a short time to reject goods and after this time period we are limited to claiming a repair, or possibly a replacement or partial refund. We agreed to a repair for free, by the dealership. The fact they offered the repair for free is an admission of liability. The fact that the repair failed does not change matters. They attempted to resolve the problem but without success. Any repair that is carried out must prove to be long-lasting and effective and in this case it was not. While I realise that the car is slightly older, Evans Halshaw are legally obliged to sell cars that are roadworthy and they have not done this.

I feel that we are not only entitled to expenses for the costs that were incurred when the car was off road but also for the extra cost of having the throttle body replaced.

I wish to receive a response from you within 14 days or I will take this matter further with my solicitor.

We went to EH Clifton Moor York last weekend with my in laws, they bought a used Berlingo and were told you should be able to pick it up on Tuesday, tiesday came and they were told oh you cant have it we havent got the log book ? I couldnt believe a dealer such as EH would sell a car with no log book, the mil has had to get temp insurance on her old car as the new car now has the cover which she cant use and its costing £28 a week for the temp cover, we shall be wriiting a strongly worded letter of complaint to these set of to55ers.
You may click thanks if you found my advice useful

I thought I might add to this thread with a positive outcome. I was misinformed as to delivery dates for my motabilty car (Ford UK) which would have caused some inconvenience. Having spoken to Motability and Ford Mobility I was encouraged by Ford UK to go to a Senior Manager at Pendragon.

    Pendragon PLC
    Loxley House

    Tel: 01623 725200
    Fax: 01623 725010
    Email: enquiries@pendragonplc.com

The PA at Pendragon took my details and within the day the Senior Manager came back to me with a generous and flexible solution which was then enhanced on by the dealer and a very generous offer made by the close of business that day. :)
  • I have had nothing but doors slamming when trying to sort car problems out after purchasing it cash from Evans Halshaw.
Thank you for posting head office contact details maybe they can shake Cardiff up for me

    Hi Peeps,
I purchased a 'runabout' Grand Suzuki Vitara '52' plate from EH back end of May this year.

At first opportunity (7days later) we took it to a suitable location to test the 4x4. The noise & drive was so bad it allerted 2 Rangers!!

My other half & the 2 Rangers were underneath the vehicle but couldnt find anything wrong. As it was ok in 2 wheel drive we drove it the short distance home.

We contacted EH & they couldnt book it in for a month when a courtesy car would be available but told us as it drove in 2 wheel ok we could continue to drive it.

On 2 seperate occassions I drove a 70 mile round trip (one of which was for them to put it on a diagnostic as the malfunction indicator light came on) and called in and asked them to take a look at it to give them a better idea as to what they were dealing with & incase they needed to order any parts...They declined saying they had it booked in with a local 4x4 specialist.

A week after taking it in for the diagnostic - 30 days after informing them of the 4x4 problem I drove the vehicle 35 miles to Stoke & collected a courtesy vehicle at a charge of £10 per day. As I was only due to have it 1 day, it was cheaper to pay the £10 than change cover on my own insurance.
I received a call around 4pm from EH, they needed the vehicle another day as they hadnt found the problem, & I could keep the courtesy vehicle & commented my Warranty would only cover £500! NO, my warranty does not specify that!!!!
I called the place where they had taken my vehicle...
He had told EH the problem & cost - Broken Axel & Idle Air Valve needed replacing at a cost of £2,200 BUT the Gear Box could not be checked for damage until Axel was fixed!!!

No wonder EH lied about not knowing the problem & commenting on warranty limit!

Lots of emails, lots of hassle in the meantime trying to get them to repair it at no cost to me, or I get it fixed & they pay or I would be happy to get it repaired with used parts, with no luck although they offered £1000 towards repairs or Buy vehicle back (which would have left me without a car and cost to hire one til i found another, plus £300 out of pocket from their admin charges when buying the vehicle), or a replacement vehicle from their stock to the same value of the vehicle (no thanx matey!). I ended up having the courtesy vehicle for 30 days before they demanded it back... 'I dont know if you're aware Miss Evans, but we will not be charging you for the courtesy car, so saving you £300'... too bloody right you're not was my thought!

I had my vehicle removed by my mechanic & 10 days late its fixed but at my expense with used parts. EH said I had caused the damage, but we have the offending parts & sorry EH - you're wrong looking at the amount of rust on the break!

All through-out their corresspondances they keep refering to the Gear Box as the problem, we've explained to them that at no point had they expressed to us that the problem was the gear box!

I am now in the process preparing to take them to court.

I have started a Blog where I have put pictures of My Warranty, The Warranty posters with the terms (not my warranty EH) posted in the show room and the location of the posters, plus the broken Offending parts.

oops it wont let me post my 'blogspot', so you may find it by googling 'evanshalshaw-nightmare'.
