I'm trying to develop my SOW based around the jungle for my yr 8s. It's driving me nuts.I'm so ready for summer it's unbelievable. Still only 20 more get ups! Bring it on.
Do keep them going until end of term; I get so very annoyed at our DD's teachers who back off (she's only Yr6) as it is "nearly" summer so she gets bored even before the big summer break.:mad::mad:
In my view, we should be educating kids to a real working day, say 0730 to 1600 then they'll be able to cope when starting work and more importantly can complete the work in the "school" hours not at home. Train them to a real working day and to complete within timeframes that these impose as this is what they'll face if in consultancy type work later. It will also help the life-work balance aspects later in life (not that I can be seen as an examplar in that respect being in work by 0630 and usually there to 1700...)0 -
Lucky you, careful you don't run the wrath of others who have a shorter break......
I don't care!!!!

OOOh don't worry...my yr 9s will be doing coursework right up until they leave and yrs 7 & 8 are working right up until the last lesson...in fact they still have a test to do!

Seriously Stuart don't get me started on the great homework debate! I don't agree with it - causes far more problems than it solves and causes me to go red in the face with frustration. I honestly don't think the kids are being trained for the real world in anyway shape or form. For instance, one of my yr 8s said to me today that they'd come to the end of the page and didn't know what to do now!!!! TURN OVER I cried in dismay! It's frightening.Reduction in daily mortgage interest since October 23 (new mortgage) - £2.36 July 25

The school my eldest step-son will attend from September (yr 7) has a school day from 0825 to 1450. Yep, finishing school before 3 o'clock. At least the uniform is tie and blazer (plus other clothing, obviously) so he'll get used to wearing something other than a poloshirt and sweatshirt!

Our school day is 8.45 - 3.15...for the kids anyway. For us it's 8.30 - 3. 25 and then there are usually meetings etc after hours. Most of the kids are involved in clubs etc most nights so don't actually finish until 4.30. For instance, I run a science club on a Monday night for an hour.
To be honest I don't think I could cope with a longer day...there would be no time to do any of the admin...and there is A LOT of admin (a lot of which I think is unnecessary and of no consequence or impact on the kids learning) . Our kids do finish at 2.30 on a Wednesday though because we have staff inset on a Wednesday.Reduction in daily mortgage interest since October 23 (new mortgage) - £2.36 July 25

I thought my comments might just get a response, but one in red
My usual working day starts in the office at 0630 so I can if necessary call clients in eastern time zones, by 1300 I can call clients in central USA, so I can cover about 15-16 time zones in my day. I finish around 1645-1700 typically but it can be later although I try not to do too many 12hr days. Pay is fixed irrespective of hours
beyond contracted 36 (no flex) and usually work 44-46 but more if traveling. Today I worked at home so had a lie-in until 0530 :j started about 0620 finished 1820.
Friday I leave 1615 and I try to encourage my staff to get away on time too for the weekend to get a break, and have been trying to be good recently and not use VPN to work at the weekends
Twinklie I know you don't set the hours, but good to hear you don't think we are helping children prepare for the real world of work. So much for those statements in the 1970s that technology would free us up to have more leisure time, I think we've seen the golden age of reasonable working hours, caring employers and early retirement in 1995-2000, it seems it's all downhill from now on. Children need to learn fast about life as well as they adapt to new technology, we just need to make the system realistic so they too can try to plan work-life balance (you'll gather I get fair critism on the latter!). Maybe then they'll be better at that than we are?
Money Observer July edition arrived today - one article highlighting the end of final salary pension schemes even for those already in them.... damn my plans could be ruined! What more reasons do you need to be a MFW?
Must remember to "put on me 'appy head fur t'mmorrow" as Worzil Gumage would say and leave my grumpy old man head behind!0 -

Some very interesting articles on the BBC website. What really annoys me is the holier than though financial institutions who are now turning up at company AGM's and pointing the finger at final salary pension schemes demanding they be scrapped due to high cost.
Yes, they pillaged our companies, our banks, our insurance companies, building societies etc etc etc and now they want to get more to make up for their current woes by getting the few remaining companies with final salary schemes to give them up.
Yes - same here wondering whether plans will hold up and thankful to be chasing the MF dream because it's going to be a rocky few years.RosieTiger - Highest £242,000 Feb 2004

Stuart...you are officially nuts! What on earth do you do for a living? I'm pooped. Our school has no way of cooling down and my room is above a hydrotherapy pool! Its HOT HOT HOT! I've come home exhausted (purely down to the heat) from school every night for the last week or so. Thankfully we've just had a storm which has made it a wee bit better.
Kids are not getting prepared for the world of work AT ALL. Another classic example today with a lad that is 14!
"Why aren't you working?"
"I don't have any paper"
"What you going to do about it?"
"Don't know"
"Why don't you get some?"
"Where is it?"
"SAME PLACE IT'S BEEN SINCE SEPTEMBER!!!!!!!!!!"

What breed do you have Shelley?
I don't have any at the moment. My beautiful Springer Spaniel went to doggy heaven 18 months ago. As I was living in limbo and have still yet to buy my new home puppy purchasing is on hold
Plans are to get two springer pups when I get the house - even though everyone keeps trying to convince me to go for less nutty breed :rotfl:
I have to say your long summer sounds lovely and shame they'll be no pup but have to say don't fancy having to try and educate cheeky, lazy kids!
As a fellow public sector worker I agree whole heartedly with pain in bottom paperwork and admin that does sod all to improve quality of any services but means lots of managers have pieces of paper to shuffle and produce stats on :mad::mad:Looking for the perfect home and saving to make becoming a MFW easier

Now to be what you wanna be need to get the job which can fulfill your demand as well as paying off the mortgages. And seems that you are preparing yourself to so that. So try to be on the correct track and don't be hasty so that you don't loose.0
