I have the Philips Delizia too. Instead of a bowl, it has a 2" flat disc which fits easily in the freezer.

I haven't used it much, mainly because it was the end of summer when I bought it.

Somehing is important to note though - Ice-cream makers don't actually make ice-cream - they freeze ice-cream but you have to make the custard or whatever base first. For really good vanilla ice-cream you have to cook and then chill the custard thoroughly before starting the machine. It's fabulous as an occasional treat but as someone who is out of the house a lot I don't plan to do that very often.

DFC nope, choc icecream! I think....

Which ones don't need to go in the freezer? I suppose I am lazy and want one I can throw everything in and it mixes/freezes it :o I was looking at the Cuisinart one but unsure what each one does, it says 'fully automatic'. I don't think my budget would stretch to the Simac ones.

Suppose if I didn't have 11 pots of B&J in the freezer I could fit the bowl in...
One day I might be more organised...........

  • Well my ice-cream maker arrived today! :)
    It's teeny!
Will have to get some double dream (eek!!) and give it a try but if anyone knows how to make frozen yoghurt please let me know.
Is it just a case of popping a big tub of it straight in or is it more complicated than that?

For frozen yoghurt, you get a good result using a nice quality Greek yoghurt and yes, you can put it straight in (maybe flavour it first if you like, with fresh fruit puree for example). Otherwise mix some cream in with ordinary yoghurt.

  • My Russell Hobbs 'Temptations' arrived yesterday . I have the bowl frozen ready to go in my freezer :) . I wanted to try this one since it was only £15.99 so i thought it was abit more MS (incase i dont use it much ;))

    So my question now

Can those with ice cream makers post for us ice cream maker 'virgins' their favorite receipe :)

I had 8 or so with my machine but they all seem to have egg yolks. Is their any variation on the types of ice cream we can make.. So without egg yolks or without double cream ?

    Thanks

Well just went to the local shop and bought some double cream and am about to put my first batch of ice cream in the freezer! :o
I had never even made custard before today so I am thrilled that turned out okay.
Proof will be in the eating.
    Will report back later.... :D

EDIT: What shall I do with the 2 leftover egg whites please?

How about freezing them then making a meringue when you make some more tomorrow ;)

  • Hi.

I got myself an ice cream maker last week but have been unable to get my head around it. I have searched the threads on here and also google but can't find what I am looking for. I wonder if anyone can help.

I want to try a basic recipe out. Perhaps a frozen yogurt with raspberries (as I have both yogurt and raspberries in the house!) or a plain vanilla.

A lot of the recipes are either American or don't use an ice cream maker, which makes me unsure of when to put the mixture in the machine. Do I whip cream up first or does the machine do that.

The book which came with it and the Ben and Jerry's books I got are both American.

Any starter recipes would be great, but also need guidance as to when to put in machine and what to do beforehand!

Thank you so much for any help you might be able to give.

Is it the sort where you have to freeze the bowl before using the machine? They are very easy to use, I adore my little Kenwood. You need to make sure you freeze the bowl for 24 hours, and you need to set the machine running before pouring in the ice cream mixture. Also don't overfill the machine. You also have to freeze the ice cream for a few hours even after using the machine as it will be very soft.

I made a lemon frozen yoghurt the other day. 2 1/2 cups of yoghurt, 1 cup of sugar, juice and rinds of two lemons. Couldn't be easier. Just mix together and churn until it's done.

If you want vanilla ice cream you have to make a custard. I use a little bit of cornflour which stops the custard splitting and makes it easier and quicker. This is the recipe I use (from a blog post I did recently).

300ml milk (semi-skimmed or whole is fine)
    70g caster sugar
4 egg yolks (make meringues with the leftover egg whites!)
    2 tsp GOOD vanilla extract
300ml pot of double or whipping cream (some pots are 287ml which is fine)
    1 heaped tsp cornflour

Heat the milk and vanilla in a saucepan till it just comes to a boil. Meanwhile whisk the sugar, egg yolks and cornflour in a bowl. Pour on the boiling milk - a little bit first to temper the eggs so they don't scramble, whisk it in, then pour on the rest and whisk it all together. Pour the whole thing back into the saucepan over a lowish heat and keep stirring till it thickens enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon. Pour the custard back into the bowl and stand it in a sink filled with cold water (with ice cubes if you have some) to cool it down quickly. Then chill it in the fridge for at least 4 hours or even until the next day. This lets the flavours develop.

When you're ready to make the ice cream, pour the cream into the custard (no need to whip it first) and mix it all together. Churn this in your ice cream machine.
