Also HM ice cream tends to go harder than bought in the freezer so remember you may well need to get it out of the freezer ahead of time and leave it in fridge or on side to soften a little. Perhaps have a practice run? I'm sure you can find a use for a bit of extra ice cream - LOL!0

I was going to say the same as stiltwalker - it does go rock hard in the freezer! you may want to make more than one batch (as you dont get all that much in a home I C maker).
I did find homemade icecreams much nicer and you get to control the flavours - and what fun that is! the kids used to love coming up with flavours for the sorbets we made (I mostly made sorbets as DS2 is dairy allergic). the one which was universally loved (and I made loads of it over the years was ..............Watermelon! closely followed by blackberry, Strawberry and Tinned peach! Kiwi Fruit was liked by grown ups, but not kids. and for a very grown up after dinner sorbet you can always add booze to the mix. even a tablespoon of a nice liquer can really add a special touch to your sorbet.0 -

Hi everyone.
Walking round the carboot sale this morning I spotted an ice cream maker. I thought it would be nice to take to the caravan as my little Grandson loves ice cream. Its a bit bulky and he wanted £20 but we settled on £12. I was having a bit of shoppers remorse until I found it online..... £560 to buy new!:eek:
However it didn't come with any recipes, only a user manual. Do I have to use loads of eggs and mess with custards?
I also fancy making something not quite so fattening every once in a while so any suggestions welcome please?

I am VERY VERY jealous! I would nearly sell my granny for one of those, I have a little cheap one that you have to pre-freeze but it gets used constantly, and one with a built-in freezer will be beyond my budget for many years until we get the house renovated and we both get new cars
Have a look in the library for a book called The Perfect Scoop by David Lebovitz. You will probably end up buying yourself a copy, it's such a great bookIt has every sort of ice cream recipe, from custard-based to sorbet to recipes you just mix together and churn. Plus lots of accompaniments like sauces and biscuits. And it explains how to use your machine.
Which make and model is it, as perhaps the instructions can be found online?0 -
I have a gelato. You can make any ice cream in it, try simple things like frozen flavoured greek yoghurt, or frozen yoghurt plus double or whipping cream, or bought best fresh custard and cream. You need to let the machine stand for 24 hours before use0

Thanks for that, I shall be at the library in the morning! I have the instruction manual that tells you how to remove the bowl/clean it etc but there are no recipes in it. I don't fancy using loads of eggs, especially when making it for a three year old.
The machine I got is a Simac Gelataio Plus. Its the same as this one but white http://www.coffeeitalia.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=sicmilg4 I think mine is quite a few years old though.
I've been looking at doing something with maybe fresh custard or a tin of coconut milk. I want to experiment with easy recipes and not the egg yolks way.
It weighs a ton though, wouldn't want to drag it around much!0 -
Kittie do I have to let it stand even if its not new? I read on the manual about putting it on its side for 12 hours but again I think that is for a new one, something about the fluids separating.
I like the idea of using yoghurts, I make my own, maybe I could incorporate that to make some healthy puddings.0 -

1/3 to 1/2 cup of honey
1 teaspoon organic vanilla extracts, optional
2 teaspoon organic peppermint extract
3 ounces of dark chocolate
