I just got the co-op mag and they have some recipe ideas in there. Will probably try the strawberry one later! :T0

Just a quick update. I made a strawberry ice cream using a tin of value custard, four big spoons of creme fraiche and a pack of angel delight made with milk. Its gorgeous! So thick and creamy.
It was very soft so I finished it off in the freezer.
My son is just finishing off the last of it now. Going to try a mint choc chip with fresh mint tomorrow, oh dear, there goes my waistline!0 -
i use this strawberry gelato recipe, its sublime,
http://www.askchefdennis.com/2011/10/strawberry-gelato/
i have used fresh strawberries for it but used tins of cherries, mandarins etc to the same quantity, gelato has a nicer, creamier flavour than ice cream, but less fat0 -

Who thought that ice cream could be so confusing
most of the recipes do use eggs, but raw and whisked into the cream, (sounds awful but tastes fab) it gives you the cookie dough recipe too as well as many others.
I make a basic vanilla ice cream and at the last minute fold in a pack of maltesers which i've crushed a bit so some remain whole - absolutely lovely
oreo ice cream can be made by substituting chopped oreos for the malteasers'We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time0 -
I can't believe you mentioned maltesers, thats exactly what my son asked for last night.
Midnightraven, thanks for that, looks simple enough, although like the guy says, I think I will try it with milk instead of water.
Interestingly when I bought this machine I was thinking of my Grandson who came round yesterday and tried a bit... and left it! I think its a bit 'strong' for him, he's used to Mr Whippy. Never mind, my son is enjoying it!0 -
I've just bought new batteries for my Panasonic and did give in and buy double cream for my most recent attempt, but I feel bad using it.
Anyway, I found this recipe for cornstarch icecream which seems to have rave reviews
I'm going to try it when the other icecream has gone. No eggs, no cream. And you can used any type of milk (we always have semi skimmed in the fridge, so I'll be trying that).
Sounds a lot cheaper and less sinful than the icecream I've made before! From what I gather it's an Italian concept, someone else might know more about that.
Anyway, if anyone does try it before I do, please do report back! :T0 -
Thanks for the recipe Lucyeff.
Today I did the mint chocolate with a tin of coconut milk, some creme fraiche and half a tin of custard from yesterday. When it was nearly ready I drizzled in some warm dark chocolate and let it set for a minute before turning the mixer on again.
The chocolate cracked and broke up and was delicious! However i'm bored of creme fraiche, its just not sweet enough for me so I may bite the bullet and get some double cream!0 -
I saw an ice cream maker for sale in a charity shop and wonder whether this would be a nippy way to make it or is like many other allegedly labour saving gadgets that take an age to use/clean?
What is your experience of an ice cream making machine - better/quicker ice cream than the manual method?0 -
Counter top/self freezing or with a compartment to put in the freezer?
If you eat a lot of expensive icecream i think the ones that take it from custard/ingrediants to frozen are excellent (when i had one i used it for entertaining a lot as it was so easy to make a luxury icecream with no effort and little time). easy to clean, little faff (excepting making a custard for most recipes)
Freezer ones tbh i think are too much faff for the investment.
If you are more a soft scoop / non lux brand type of icecream eater i am not sure its worth the bother at all tbh.0 -
I didn't know there were two types but it's a small unit so I assume it has a drawer to put into the freezer (having said that, the charity shop has two different brands of ice cream machines for sale so perhaps they have both types, too).0
