The people who have a power in law to search you (i.e. physically go through your pockets) are the police and then only if sufficiant grounds exsist (or section 44 or section 60 are in place). I think other warranted officers (prison officers, immigration, customs etc) have powers as well, but they are very much more limited and certainly don't apply to cinema staff
The cinema (or nightclub, pub, whatever) is private property and as such it is up to them who they choose to let in, if they choose to say that as a condition of entry we are going to search you that is up to them. They could say that you must be wearing smart shoes and a collar, like some nightclubs do, it's up to them.
Simular to when you go to the airport, the BBA security staff have no legal right to search you, but it is a condition of entering the departure area that you are searched. If you refuse to be searched you will be refused entry.... and the police will probably turn up and search you under section 44 of the Terrorisum Act anyway!0 -

the fact is they will continue to charge what they want. It doesnt just stop at cinema's does it?
They have their own policy.
How much are sweets in Blockbusters, compared to asda?
How much are sweets in Alton Towers compared to asda?
How much are sweets in work canteens compared to asda?
How much are sweets at football grounds?
The lists are endless.0 -
Our local cinema had a sign up saying you weren't allowed to take food in for about a month or so, but they took it down cos everyone did anyway. If you have a fairly decent sized handbag it's not that hard to take crisps, a chocolate bar and a can of juice in with you."Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, But beautiful old people are works of art."

I went to the cinema today to see Cloverfield (which I really enjoyed, highly recommended) and as I was having a little browse in town I decided to pick up the pick and mix from Wilkinsons, 55p for 100g, got just over £2.00 of sweets and other half did the same, so £4.00 for pick and mix that would have cost at least double that at the cinema, also bought two bottles of diet pepsi for £1 from poundland. I personally never buy pick and mix or sweets from the cinema, it's such a rip off. It's so ridiculous, you pay enough for tickets and then have to sit through 15 minutes of tv adverts (I timed it today) before you even get to the previews. I'd rather go without, than pay those prices, it's supposed to be a treat and shouldn't cost the earth to see a film. Daylight robbery!:A :

its the only way they make their money. u can bring ur own food in as long as its not bait. i mean unless u strollin in wid a chilli sauce kebab or a dufflebag fulla goodies. a usual handbag/carrier bag per person and u wont get caught.0

I think the only way a civilian can search is if the person being searched has given permission. If there is a sign up saying by entering you are giving permission to have your bag searched,ok,and the same with a body search..this discussion is getting rather silly..0

You can't blame cinemas for trying, but I hate captive markets. Personally I take a pack of M&Ms in one pocket and a can of soda in the other with me when I go to watch a movie and have yet to be refused entry.Hoping this year is better than the last.0

If cinema's charged a reasonable price for their food items then I bet they will have a lot less people smuggling stuff in.
Our cinema has a kids club in the morning where its £1.50 for children and free entry for adults, we went to watch Surfs Up the other week and while getting the tickets (which conveniantly they don't use ticket booths anymore, you have to get them at the sweets counter!) I noticed, for a large tub of popcorn (which isn't that large TBH) it was £7!! It doesn't even taste of anything unless you get a burnt one.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0
