Bouncers can BY LAW search you for weapons or drugs if you are planning to enter the club they are working at. It is a condition of entry. Do a search - the information is easy to find on the net. They are however required to abide by strict guidelines. You will find those guidelines in your search also. Or you could choose not to search and remain ignorant of the true facts.

What law would that be, act and section please?

I actually wrote to Vue quite independently last year complaining that their food and drink prices were taking the pi$$ and got a very standard "we're so hard done by, the mean film distributors take all our money away, so in order to make our mountains of profit we have to screw kids over on their sweeties" response.

I just think the whole thing sucks to be honest. They advertise over and over again (no matter how hard you try to avoid it) CINEMA: It's the experience that counts.

well, as far as I'm concerned, having a drink and a hotdog, some nachos, a bag of popcorn, whatever is a part of the experience.

When you do the maths on it, though, it's just crazy.

If three people go to the vue, have a hot dog and a drink, it can easily set you back £40 - for that money you could go to a shop, buy a DVD, buy a DVD player to watch it on, buy several litres of coke, all the hotdogs you can eat and sit at home without people getting up in front of you, people chattering through the movie etc etc etc.

And I don't believe that their pricing strategy is the most profitable way of doing it. If they made it £1 for a hotdog, £1 for a coke, like EVERYONE in the cinema would have at least one of each - and they'd still make 400% mark up or something...the whole thing's just dumb.

Granted it is rip off. But what I don't understand is why can't people can't manage not to eat or drink for an couple of hours.

I use to go to the cinema a lot as I use to get free tickets and would have to rush from work to get there so no tea.

At a free showing I would sometimes buy a drink and a popcorn because I was hungry and it had not cost me nothing to get in. But I have seen people smuggling in drinks and food at a free showing

That doesn't work, they will make more money by having higher prices.

I used to work in a Motorway Service station when I was doing my A levels & have also worked in Airports for completely different companies. I've heard umpteen times from customers "you'd make more money if you charged less because you'd sell more". All the companies have tried it, none of them made any more money!

That basically shows that the majority of people will pay the asking price rather than go without because they think it cost too much etc etc.

with 3 kids.. I always pop into the supermarket or homebargains to stock up on sweets, popcorn and pop to take into cinema.... kids take a rucksack in with them and it has never been an issue..
  • Gig venues do this too. they search you on pretense of drugs/ weapons, and then remove your drinks and food. You then get taxed £4 / beer, £2 for water etc when you get in.

    Private Security Industry Act 2001

Find the section yourself - this is as far as I'm prepared to go in spoonfeeding another adult.

No need for the attitude! I have read that act and can not in it any mention of any power of search, as far as I can see it sets up the SIA and sets out how it will operate. It gives SIA representatives a power to enter premises, but make no mention of a power of search for SIA registered door staff... please 'spoon feed' me some more!

Yes, it's expensive - so I buy juice and sweets at a shop on the way, put them in my handbag and just buy popcorn on the premises....I've never been questioned.
