My local (Ipswich store) has tightened up its policy on redemption of vouchers for products you haven't actually bought. Down from 5 to 3 - has anyone else noticed a clamp down?

My local store is also Ipswich. In my experience they go through phases of tightening the rules and relaxing them again. I have also found if you go to a till with a young, male, 'I'm only here so I can go clubbing tonight' cashier they tend to put all the vouchers through! Avoid middle aged, female, jobs worth battle axes at all cost.
  • It's got everything to do with the shop assistant. I usually Self scan coupons, and have become quite friendly with a couple of the supervisors recently. They have told me that I can use as many coupons as I like pretty much.
Today though, it was an entirely different lady supervising... I had £35 of shopping and my first coupon would not scan for some reason, the supervisor came up and asked what the coupon was for? It was a Marie Claire one.......... she asked if I had bought the item. I smiled nicely and said that I beleived the policy to be, I could use as many coupons as I liked, as long as Tesco stocked the item and I was only using one coupon of each sort.... No, she said, I don't think that's right.... You can use two... some members of staff have lost their jobs through taking coupons...
I just smiled, put the coupons away and told her that I wasn't going to argue with her.... and have a nice day!
To be honest, she was not convincing at all, she was less sure of the policy than I was...

I will stick to Friday afternoons, when the staff know what they are allowed to do

But at the same time, in the same shopm my daughter went through a manned till, spent £16 ish and managed to hand over enough coupons to take her bill down to a fiver...

Asda Llansamlet refused to take ANY of my £1 huggies vouchers - said they'd stopped accepting vouchers unless the item was purchased.
The voucher expiry date isn't up until August, so maybe they'll change their minds yet again before then, otherwise it looks like my new grandchild (due August) is going to have 10 packs of huggies nappies to start him or her off in life.

Sorry - I know this was a tesco thread, but a poster suggested using asda if Tesco wouldn't accept them - I just wanted to warn everyone that it may not be possible.

  • I haven't been on this board or used coupons for ages, as I've been shopping in Sainsburys. But yesterday, as I had the Huggies coupons from the Pregnancy & whatever magazine & some clubcard points vouchers, I went to Tescos. I got £30 of shopping and went thru' the self scan and used £4.50 worth of Huggies vouchers and mixed them in with my points vouchers. I stupidly started feeling all confident and so put in another £1 pampers vouchers that I'd found in my pocket and, ofcourse, it beeped and needed authorisation. I did my best to remain confident and just ignored the assistant who came over, and started to pack my shopping. She went off and got the key and opened up the coupon box and went thru' all my vouchers, she could obviously see I hadn't bought the items from the list on the till but she was more concern about the clubcard vouchers and asked to see my clubcard which she checked against those coupons, which were luckily mine. She shut the till up and played with my baby whilst I paid. I came out of the store in a right old fluster having remain calm throughout the incident, as always it's down to the store and the SA and you just have to brave it out.

Was already with my stuff on the belt, happy scanner targetted when they changed shift. Bloke who came on is a bit of a jobsworth so I thought I was jiggered. Surprise, surprise he was that much of a jobsworth he relayed the coupon policy that we all know is the official line. I'll use him again as I'm using legitimate in date coupons and he knows what the score is.

It depends the SA's, I went to Bradford tescos, used £9.60 worth of vouchers on a £10.26 shop, went back a few days later could only use 10% of shop, went to Crossflatts tesco express, used £19.43 worth of vouchers on a £25.98 shop, went back a few days later couldn't use any at all. Went to skipton tescos yesterday and put £10.80 vouchers through on a £60.87 shop.
  • Hi, I am new to this and have only kind of worked out how the posts and forums all work lol (Confusing since I'm usually quite tech-savvy)!

Just wanted to offer some advice as I work in Tesco's and have access to information that a lot of shopfloor staff don't so can point all you money savers in the right directions...

What I would say is that I work in an extra store and although you think you are getting the best deals with using a lot of coupons what I will say is that if your going to do it, decide whether you want the money off or the clubcard points on your card.

I say this because we and other stores have checkout supervisors that are on the look out for saving the company money, if they see you abusing the system they can track you from your clubcard which is why in the small print it says Tesco have the right to stop your clubcard (or something to that effect) and for this reason I would suggest when using lots of money off coupons you pay in cash as opposed to card.

However if you have a big shop and your wanting 25p off, I don't think there going to stop your clubcard over this, but I know they look for repeat offenders and it makes more sense to get the money off as opposed to clubcard points...

Would also like to say as I am new to this would anyone like to point me in the right direction of other threads to post on that are along these lines as I'm not 100% sure this is the best thread to post this information on?

    Thanks and happy money saving!

    Hi Miss-Lfc

Don't the till supervisors OK the transactions? My experience in 3 stores is that the till beeps at a point (whatever that is), and the super OKs.

There's lots of other Tesco threads you might have a look to see where you feel confident in helping out. Do you have an answer to the % purchased or no. of coupons debate? Phew! my local's back to accepting coupons (see previous post).
  • Hi Nine Tails,

If you can give me a date on when this policy, or 'policy' first came about then I can try and find out by looking through all the messages to staff to see if this is the case. I have no real reason to ask myself i.e. 'I need advice as this customer wanted to use these coupons etc' as I'm not actually a till operator at the moment but like I say if you have a date it maybe in the records somewhere...

Also I think now Tesco employee's would have 'lightened up' about this situation depending on how much they knew because our store was actually over budget for xmas meaning we had to make up the costs elsewhere i.e. staff cuts and not being able to give out overtime which is why alot of people esp til operators have had the fear of being sacked put into them so they way they see it their not going to risk there job to save you £1 or something if they are in doubt of doing wrong.

However, because the new tax year is approaching, the week commencing 1st March is week one in Tesco, which basically means new budget and managers can start to employ new people and offer more overtime to existing staff members :j

All I know about the tills is that the operator doesn't have as much say as people think, for example if a customer decides they don't want something and it as already been put through the till, they have to call a super to void the item as they cannot actually do this themselves (well they can, but they shouldn't and therefore can't/won't).

Ah yes, I noticed other threads, I think I need to make the time to sit and read through the last few pages really, is there an option to view all posts on one thread rather than in pages?
